Computer Security: A Machine Learning Approach

Machine learning approaches Information Security is one of the key areas today as securing computers especially against novel attacks becomes a daunting task. Intrusion detection is a method by which unauthorised access to one’s assets is detected. In this paper, we present an application of the field of machine learning to computer security, particularly to intrusion detection. We analyse two learning algorithms (NBTree and VFI) for the task of detecting intrusions and compare their relative performances. We then comment on the suitability of NBTree algorithm over VFI for the intrusion detection task based on its high accuracy and high recall.
