80 years of electrospinning
Electrospinning is a relatively simple fibre-forming process and offers a unique method to produce nanofibers. The process exists at this moment 80 years and has seen a very turbulent history. There is a need to see what actually happened in this history. We have taken a brief look in the history of electrospinning. This paper is reporting on some of the aspects that electrospinning encountered. It is crucial to see that electrospinning has been used in different countries in different time periods. The history of electrospinning is mainly characterised by bad timing. The future of electrospinning looks however quit bright
80 Years of Gardner Magic
The magician and historiam Max Maven poignantly eulogized Martin Gardner in his article In Memoriam in the July 2010 issue of GENII magazine. Commenting on the diverse interests of Gardner in non-fiction, puzzles, recreational mathematics, philosophy, games, skepticism, word play and magic, Maven noted: So far as is known, the final Gardner publication during his lifetime was a magic trick that he contributed to the May 2010 issue of Word Ways, a quarterly journal with a small but fervent readership. I will mention, without humility, that the trick was based on one of mine -- which in turn was based on one of Martin\u27s
15 years of comet photometry: A comparative analysis of 80 comets
In 1976 we began a program of narrowband photometry of comets that has encompassed well over 400 nights of observations. To date, the program has provided detailed information on 80 comets, 11 of which have been observed on multiple apparitions. In this paper we present the observed range of compositions (molecular production rate ratios) and dustiness (gas production compared with AF-rho) for a well sampled group of comets. Based on these results we present preliminary analysis of taxonomic groupings as well as the abundance ratios we associate with a 'typical' comet
Fighting austerity: Why after 80 years the General Theory is still relevant today,
The guiding spirit of the Keynesian Revolution is that full employment is a goal which
can be pursued not by following the free market rules, but by reshaping them by means of
public intervention. This message was widely accepted for thirty years as from the end of the
Second World War by all the advanced countries which actively engaged in full employment
and welfare policies, and subsequently abandoned with the neo-liberal Restoration which saw
the dogmas of individualism and de-regulation prevailing. In reclaiming the topical importance
of the General Theory, we should take into consideration the changed circumstances of today’s
world when compared to those of twenty – let alone eighty – years ago, although there are
notable similarities between the Great Depression of the 1930s – Keynes’s world – and our
contemporary crisis. However, his prescription for a better society is still relevant: it lies in
setting rules and limitations in the market arena, not letting individual self-interest prevail, and
putting some governing bodies in charge of filling the gap when deficient aggregate demand
occurs, so that the acquisition of material goods and the fruition of the enjoyments of life be
not a privilege of the few but the conquest of civilization
How Has the Literature on Gini's Index Evolved in the Past 80 Years?
The Gini coefficient or index is perhaps one of the most used indicators of social and economic conditions. From its first proposal in English in 1921 to the present, a large number of papers on the Gini index has been written and published. Going through these papers represents a demanding task. The aim of this survey paper is to help the reader to navigate through the major developments of the literature and to incorporate recent theoretical research results with a particular focus on different formulations and interpretations of the Gini index, its social welfare implication, and source and subgroup decomposition.Gini coefficent or index; social welfare; decomposition; computation
