"Era costa brava é mal país en tierra”: wayfarers and navigators to the northwest of the New Spain
In the middle of the 16th century the Viceroy of the New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza, sends two expeditions to the northwest in search of Seven Cíbola's Cities: a group for land supervised by Vásquez de Coronado and a group by sea supervised by Hernando de Alarcón. Both Relations that narrate these trips are analyzed illustrating the speech of the navigators and the speech of the wayfarers
Hom

have been detected, belonging to 5 families and 7 genera. Achelia echinata, Ammothella longipes and Callipalene emaciata are the most frequent taxa. Their European distribution is presented. This fauna is similar to the Mediterranean one
Two new liverworts for Europe in Macaronesia : Odontoschisma prostratum (Sw.) Trevis. on the Azores and Jungermannia callithrix Lindenb. & Gottsche on the Azores and Madeira
Odontoschisma prostratum (Sw.) Trevis. and Jungermannia callithrix Lindenb. et Gottsche, two liverworts mainly distributed in the Neotropics, are reported at hand of many collections from Macaronesia. O. prostratum occurs on 8 of the 9 Azorean islands, growing on all type of substrates, even epiphyllous, but rarely in bogs. J. callithrix is known from 8 Azorean islands and from Madeira, growing epigeic. The phytogeographical interest of the occurrence on the Azores of some 39 liverworts (among 147) belonging to the neotropical and/or paleotropical elements is discussed. Most of the neotropical species may have been easily transported to the Azores by the frequent depressions (or occasionally storms) moving rapidly at relatively low altitude (3,000 m) from the North or Central American eastern coasts or from the Caribbean islands and Bermuda to Western Europe in a few days. Only a few of these species could have been be introduced by human activities, mainly along the coast
Checklist of brachyuran crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda) from the eastern tropical Pacific
Literature dealing with brachyuran crabs from the east Pacific is reviewed. Marine and brackish water species reported at least once in the Eastern Tropical Pacific zoogeographic subregion, which extends from Magdalena Bay, on the west coast of Baja California, Mexico, to Paita, in northern Peru, are listed and their distribution range along the Pacific coast of America is provided. Unpublished records, based on material kept in the author's collections were also considered to determine or confirm the presence of species, or to modify previously published distribution ranges within the study area. A total of 450 species, belonging to 181 genera, are included in the checklist, the first ever made available for the entire tropical zoogeographic subregion of the west coast of America. A list of names of species and subspecies currently recognized as invalid for the area is also included
Ecological adaptation of wild peach palm, its in situ conservation and deforestation-mediated extinction in Southern Brazilian Amazonia.
The Arc of Fire across southern Amazonia seasonally attracts worldwide attention as forests are cut and burned for agricultural expansion. These forests contain numerous wild relatives of native South American crops, such as peach palm

Hiraea cuneata, H. macrophylla, and four new species confused with them: H. hatschbachii, H. occhionii, H. reitzii, and H. restingae (Malpighiaceae)
Specimens of Hiraea (Malpighiaceae) from the Brazilian states of eastern Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná, and Santa Catarina that had been determined as H. cuneata Griseb. and H. wiedeana A.Juss. were found to include four undescribed species. The assemblage traditionally named Hiraea cuneata includes, in addition to H. cuneata (Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro), two novelties: H. hatschbachii C.E.Anderson (Paraná) and H. occhionii C.E.Anderson (Rio de Janeiro). The gatherings labelled Hiraea wiedeana comprise specimens of H. reitzii C.E.Anderson (Paraná, Santa Catarina) and H. restingae C.E.Anderson (Rio de Janeiro), here newly described, and of H. macrophylla (Colla) P.L.R.Moraes & Guglielmone (Rio de Janeiro), the earlier and correct name for the species also known as H. wiedeana. In all, the flowers are borne in a single 4-flowered umbel instead of a compound arrangement, as is often characteristic of other species of Hiraea. Specimens assigned to Hiraea cuneata have the laminas abaxially sericeous initially but glabrous at maturity. In those assigned to H. wiedeana the laminas are abaxially velutinous (eventually glabrescent in H. restingae). Full descriptions and synonymies are supplied, and all species are illustrated.NSF: DEB-0543909Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/109402/1/EJB71-HirCuMa.pdfDescription of EJB71-HirCuMa.pdf : Entire articl
