Relaxation, pre-thermalization and diffusion in a noisy Quantum Ising Chain
We study the dynamics of thermalization resulting from a time-dependent noise
in a Quantum Ising Chain subject to a sudden quench of the transverse magnetic
field. For weak noise the dynamics shows a pre-thermalized state at
intermediate time scales, eventually drifting towards an asymptotic infinite
temperature steady state characterized by diffusive behavior. By computing
analytically the density of kinks, as well as the transverse and longitudinal
magnetic field correlators, we characterize these two regimes, their

Optimal Control of Quantum Dissipative Dynamics: Analytic solution for cooling the three level system
We study the problem of optimal control of dissipative quantum dynamics.
Although under most circumstances dissipation leads to an increase in entropy
(or a decrease in purity) of the system, there is an important class of
problems for which dissipation with external control can decrease the entropy
(or increase the purity) of the system. An important example is laser cooling.
In such systems, there is an interplay of the Hamiltonian part of the dynamics,
which is controllable and the dissipative part of the dynamics, which is
uncontrollable. The strategy is to control the Hamiltonian portion of the
evolution in such a way that the dissipation causes the purity of the system to
increase rather than decrease. The goal of this paper is to find the strategy
that leads to maximal purity at the final time. Under the assumption that
Hamiltonian control is complete and arbitrarily fast, we provide a general
framework by which to calculate optimal cooling strategies. These assumptions
lead to a great simplification, in which the control problem can be
reformulated in terms of the spectrum of eigenvalues of , rather than
itself. By combining this formulation with the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman
theorem we are able to obtain an equation for the globaly optimal cooling
strategy in terms of the spectrum of the density matrix. For the three-level
system, we provide a complete analytic solution for the optimal
cooling strategy. For this system it is found that the optimal strategy does
not exploit system coherences and is a 'greedy' strategy, in which the purity

AN ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE U.S. GENERIC DAIRY ADVERTISING PROGRAM USING AN INDUSTRY MODEL
The market impacts of generic dairy advertising are assessed using an industry model which encompasses supply and demand conditions at the retail, wholesale, and farm levels, and government intervention under the dairy price support program. The estimated model is used to simulate price and quantity values for four advertising scenarios: (1) no advertising, (2) historical fluid advertising, (3) historical manufactured advertising, and (4) historical fluid and manufactured advertising. Development and Characterisation of a Gas System and its Associated Slow-Control System for an ATLAS Small-Strip Thin Gap Chamber Testing Facility
A quality assurance and performance qualification laboratory was built at
McGill University for the Canadian-made small-strip Thin Gap Chamber (sTGC)
muon detectors produced for the 2019-2020 ATLAS experiment muon spectrometer
upgrade. The facility uses cosmic rays as a muon source to ionise the quenching
gas mixture of pentane and carbon dioxide flowing through the sTGC detector. A
gas system was developed and characterised for this purpose, with a simple and
efficient gas condenser design utilizing a Peltier thermoelectric cooler (TEC).
The gas system was tested to provide the desired 45 vol% pentane concentration.
For continuous operations, a state-machine system was implemented with alerting
and remote monitoring features to run all cosmic-ray data-acquisition
associated slow-control systems, such as high/low voltage, gas system and
environmental monitoring, in a safe and continuous mode, even in the absence of

Variational Uncalibrated Photometric Stereo under General Lighting
Photometric stereo (PS) techniques nowadays remain constrained to an ideal
laboratory setup where modeling and calibration of lighting is amenable. To
eliminate such restrictions, we propose an efficient principled variational
approach to uncalibrated PS under general illumination. To this end, the
Lambertian reflectance model is approximated through a spherical harmonic
expansion, which preserves the spatial invariance of the lighting. The joint
recovery of shape, reflectance and illumination is then formulated as a single
variational problem. There the shape estimation is carried out directly in
terms of the underlying perspective depth map, thus implicitly ensuring
integrability and bypassing the need for a subsequent normal integration. To
tackle the resulting nonconvex problem numerically, we undertake a two-phase
procedure to initialize a balloon-like perspective depth map, followed by a
"lagged" block coordinate descent scheme. The experiments validate efficiency
and robustness of this approach. Across a variety of evaluations, we are able
to reduce the mean angular error consistently by a factor of 2-3 compared to

American Roulette: Murder-Suicide in the United States
More than 10 murder-suicides, almost all by gun, occur each week in the United States, according to "American Roulette: Murder-Suicide in the United States", a new study by the Violence Policy Center (VPC). The study used a national news clipping service and Internet survey tools to collect incidents nationwide from January 1, 2005, through June 30, 2005, and is one of the largest and most comprehensive studies ever conducted on murder-suicide. During this six-month period, at least 591 Americans died in 264 murder-suicides, and almost all murder-suicides (92 percent) involved a firearm. Using these figures, the VPC estimates that nearly 1,200 Americans die each year in murder-suicides.VPC Legislative Director Kristen Rand states, "Murder-suicide wreaks havoc on hundreds of American families each year. Much more needs to be done to understand and prevent murder-suicide. One key aspect of prevention is reducing access to firearms, by far the weapon of choice in murder-suicide.
Unobserved component models with asymmetric conditional variances
Unobserved component models with GARCH disturbances are extended to allow for asymmetric responses of conditional variances to positive and negative shocks. The asymmetric conditional variance is represented by a member of the QARCH class of models. The proposed model allows to distinguish whether the possibly asymmetric conditional heteroscedasticity affects the short-run or the long-run disturbances or both. Statistical properties of the new model and the finite sample properties of a QML estimator of the parameters are analyzed. The correlogram of squared auxiliary residuals is shown to be useful to identify the conditional heteroscedasticity. Finite sample properties of squared auxiliary residuals are also analysed. Finally, the results are illustrated by fitting the model to daily series of financial and gold prices, as well as to monthly series of inflation. The behavior of volatility in both types of series is different. The conditional heteroscedasticity mainly affects the short-run component in financial prices while in the inflation series, the heteroscedasticity appears in the long-run component.
