Coherently manipulating cold ions in separated traps by their vibrational couplings
Recent experiments [K. R. Brown, et al., Nature 471, 196 (2011); and M.
Harlander, et al., Nature 471, 200 (2011)] have demonstrated the coherent
manipulations on the external vibrations of two ions, confined individually in
the separated ion traps. Using these recently developed techniques, we propose
here an approach to realize the coherent operations, e.g., the universal
quantum gates, between the separated ion-trap qubits encoded by two internal
atomic states of the trapped ions. Our proposal operates beyond the usual
Lamb-Dicke limits, and could be applied to the scalable ion traps coupled by
their vibrations.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Changes of Weight and in-Kernel Content Values of Maize Hybrids (Occitan, Colomba, DK-471) as a Result of Damaging dy European Corn Borer.
A hibridek a kukoricamoly károsítására egyértelmű csosúly-vesztéssel válaszoltak.
ABSTRACT
The research was conducted in the year 2001 on two fields sown with three different maize hybrids and was based on randomly chosen sample plots. The first survey was carried out on the field sown with hybrids COLOMBA and OCCITAN (total area 120 ha), the second survey was performed on 50 ha of hybrid DK-471. The assessment was focused primarily on the difference between the cobs developed by healthy and damaged maize plants with regards to their weight and the content of protein, fat and starch in the maize kernel. The hybrids unambiguously reacted to infestation by the European Corn Borer by cob weight reduction. The decrease of kernel fat content in the case of COLOMBA and that of the starch content in the case of OCCITAN displayed significant dependence on the degree of infestation by the European Corn Borer.
The results of the survey verifiably showed that in both cases either metabolism, or incorporation of protein, fat and starch had experienced disorder. A close link has been ascertained between the growth of larvae population and the kernel-cob rate of the examined hybrids. The distribution and number of larvae significantly affected the weight of maize cobs of hybrid DK-471 and the quantity of the basic nutrient components (raw protein, fat and starch) incorporated in the kernel
The Parents as Teachers Program: Its Impact on School Readiness and Later School Achievement
New research released by Dr. Edward Zigler, director emeritus of the Yale Center in Child Development and Social Policy and widely known as the "father of Head Start," explains how Parents as Teachers participation impacts children's readiness for school and performance on state performance assessments at the end of the early elementary years. The study assessed more than 7,000 Missouri children over a five-year period. The research confirms the value of Parents as Teachers participation and the direct role it plays on parenting practices that positively impact a child's learning. The most striking findings show that for poor children, high intensity participation in both Parents as Teachers and preschool appears to narrow the achievement gap at kindergarten entry and extends into third grade.A research summary is available to download. Matrix-product-groundstates for one-dimensional spin-1 quantum antiferromagnets
We have found the exact groundstate for a large class of antiferromagnetic
spin-1 models with nearest-neighbour interactions on a linear chain. All
groundstate properties can be calculated. The groundstate is determined as a
matrix product of individual site states and has the properties of the Haldane
scenario.Comment: 8 pages (plain tex), preprint cologne-93-471
Documentation of nearshore interactive wave - current - topography change models
This report is to document the programs my colleague and I developed for computing
time-dependent nearshore hydrographic changes including beach profile responses.
The time scale of the model is suitable for storm events to seasonal
changes, currently up to one year period. The model is very stable and is capable
of handling complicated topographies including inlets and irregularly-shaped
structures such as curved jetties and breakwaters.
The purpose of three-dimensional models is to predict the change of bottom
topography from the spatial distribution of the sediment transport rates, which are
evaluated from the nearshore wave and current fields computed point by point in
small areas defined by a horizontal grid placed over the region of interest. Models
of 3-D beach topography change require much fewer idealizations than do the line
models. (Document has 43 pages.
Untouchability and inter-caste relations in rural India : the case of southern Tamil villages
Justice and equality are the two subjects often talked about by most of the nationalists and leaders of various political and ideological streams across the world including India. India was at the fore-front in condemning racial discrimination particularly apartheid and also the influence of super powers) on the internal affairs of independent nations. Her commitment to secure its citizens' freedom, justice, equality and fraternity is reflected in the very preamble of the Indian Constitution. Towards achieving these challenging goals, special provisions have also been made in the Constitution to protect and promote the interests of the most oppressed section of Indian society - traditionally known as Untouchables and Constitutionally as the Scheduled Castes. These provisions are expected to alter the given unjust distribution of power (political and economic) and status (social) among different sections of people and thereby transform India into an egalitarian society. Given India's unequivocal commitment to secure its citizens these noble ideals - particularly the most exploited and pilloried section of India -, we shall attempt here to understand Indian villages, which host over 80 per cent of the Indian population, from the point of view of whether or not these villages patronise the institution of caste which is in contravention of these ideals or whether there are these little republics ideal for realising the said goals and thus to be preserved as they are as claimed by many social reformers including Mahatma Gandhi. In the process, we shall also address the question of how caste has remained unchanged, how it controls social interaction between higher and lower caste groups and accordingly perpetuates unequal control over power and status. And most importantly we shall also understand whether all the Scheduled Castes (lower castes) treat their members as equals or there is hierarchy, discrimination and practice of untouchability even among them
