The series of platinum(II), palladium(II), and nickel(II) complexes [ML₂(dppe)] [M = Ni, Pd, Pt; L = 4-SC₅H₄N or 4-SC₆H₄OMe; dppe = Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂] containing pyridine-4-thiolate or 4-methoxybenzenethiolate ligands, together with the corresponding gold(I) complexes [AuL(PPh3)], were prepared and their electrospray ionization mass spectrometric behavior compared with that of the thiophenolate complexes [M(SPh)₂(dppe)] (M = Ni, Pd, Pt) and [Au(SPh)(PPh₃)]. While the pyridine-4-thiolate complexes yielded protonated ions of the type [M + H]+ and [M + 2H]²+ ions in the Ni, Pd, and Pt complexes, an [M + H]+ ion was only observed for the platinum derivative of 4-methoxybenzenethiolate. Other ions, which dominated the spectra of the thiophenolate complexes, were formed by thiolate loss and aggregate formation. The X-ray crystal structure of [Pt(SC₆H₄OMe-4)₂(dppe)] is also reported

The repeatability of the abbreviated (4-h) Oral Fat Tolerance Test and influence of prior acute aerobic exercise

© 2016 The Author(s) Purpose: The Oral Fat Tolerance Test (OFTT) is regarded as a repeatable measure used to assess postprandial triglyceride (TAG) levels, with higher levels observed in cardio-metabolic disorders. Acute aerobic exercise intervention before OFTT reduces the TAG response, but the repeatability of this effect is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the repeatability of the abbreviated 4-h OFTT with and without immediate prior aerobic exercise. Methods: On four separate days, healthy adult male participants underwent two 4-h OFTT (n = 10) and another two 4-h OFTT with 1-h of standardised moderate intensity aerobic exercise performed immediately before meal ingestion (n = 11). The OFTT meal composition included 75.4 g total fat, 21.7 g carbohydrate and 13.7 g protein. Venous blood was sampled at baseline and hourly up to 4 h after the OFTT meal ingestion, and TAG area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Results: Nonparametric Bland–Altman analysis of 4-h TAG AUC revealed that 9 of 10 repeat measurements fell within ±15 % of the median TAG AUC for the OFTT. By contrast, two of 11 repeat measurements fell within ±15 % of the median TAG AUC for the OFTT undertaken with 1-h prior aerobic exercise. Conclusions: The 4-h OFTT is a repeatable test of postprandial TAG responses in healthy men. However, aerobic exercise performed immediately before OFTT considerably increases the variability of TAG AUC. These findings have implications for interpretation of research studies investigating exercise intervention performed immediately before OFTT. Future studies should also investigate the repeatability of exercise performed 8–24 h before OFTT

ATLASGAL-selected massive clumps in the inner Galaxy: VI. Kinetic temperature and spatial density measured with formaldehyde

We aim to directly determine the kinetic temperature and spatial density with formaldehyde for the \sim100 brightest ATLASGAL-selected clumps at 870 μ\mum representing various evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Ten transitions (JJ = 3-2 and 4-3) of ortho- and para-H2_2CO near 211, 218, 225, and 291 GHz were observed with the APEX 12 m telescope. Using non-LTE models with RADEX, we derive the gas kinetic temperature and spatial density using the measured p-H2_2CO 321_{21}-220_{20}/303_{03}-202_{02}, 422_{22}-321_{21}/404_{04}-303_{03}, and 404_{04}-303_{03}/303_{03}-202_{02} ratios. The gas kinetic temperatures derived from the p-H2_2CO 321_{21}-220_{20}/303_{03}-202_{02} and 422_{22}-321_{21}/404_{04}-303_{03} line ratios are high, ranging from 43 to >>300 K with an unweighted average of 91 ±\pm 4 K. Deduced TkinT_{\rm kin} values from the JJ = 3-2 and 4-3 transitions are similar. Spatial densities of the gas derived from the p-H2_2CO 404_{04}-303_{03}/303_{03}-202_{02} line ratios yield 0.6-8.3 ×\times 106^6 cm3^{-3} with an unweighted average of 1.5 (±\pm0.1) ×\times 106^6 cm3^{-3}. A comparison of kinetic temperatures derived from p-H2_2CO, NH3_3, and the dust emission indicates that p-H2_2CO traces a distinctly higher temperature than the NH3_3 (2,2)/(1,1) transitions and the dust, tracing heated gas more directly associated with the star formation process. The H2_2CO linewidths are found to be correlated with bolometric luminosity and increase with the evolutionary stage of the clumps, which suggests that higher luminosities tend to be associated with a more turbulent molecular medium. It seems that the spatial densities measured with H2_2CO do not vary significantly with the evolutionary stage of the clumps. However, averaged gas kinetic temperatures derived from H2_2CO increase with time through the evolution of the clumps.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
