Plants of Begonia x tuberhybrida ‘Nonstop’, ‘Clips’, and ‘Musical’ were exposed to 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks of short days (SD, 9 hours day length) initiated at 3 stages of plant development (immediately upon germination, 4 or 8 weeks after germination). Prior to and succeeding short days, plants were exposed to long days (LD, 16 hours day length). Musical flowered on average 68 days, Clips 78 days and Nonstop 83 days after germination under continuous LD conditions. In Nonstop, SD for 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks delayed plant development by an average 12 days compared to LD grown plants. One, 2, or 3 weeks of SD resulted in 1 week slower flowering and 4 weeks of SD resulted in 2 weeks later flowering in Clips. The sensitivity to SD varied with plant stage in Musical. Three or 4 weeks of SD initiated at germination or 4 weeks after germination resulted in an average delayed flowering of 13 days compared to LD plants. SD initiated 8 weeks after germination had no effect on rate of development in Musical

Suppression of allograft rejection with FK506: I. prolonged cardiac and liver survival in rats following short-course therapy

Heterotopic heart and orthotopic liver grafts from ACI donors were transplanted to Lewis rat recipients that were treated with a 3 (or 4) day course of FK506 IM that was started on postoperative day 0, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. Hearts, which rejected after a median of 6 days in untreated controls, always had prolonged survival (median 91 days) when treatment was started on postoperative day 4. The results were inferior when treatment was started earlier or later than this, but even when the first dose of FK506 was on postoperative day 5, one day before rejection was imminent in controls, the median survival was 50 days. The poorest results with a median graft survival of only 36 days were obtained when injections were on days 0–3. Results were similar with liver grafts that rejected after a median time of 10 days in nontreated controls but that usually survived permanently after a 3 (or 4) day FK506 course starting on day 0, 2, 3, or 4. Therapy started on day 6 was too late. © 1990 by Williams & Wilkins

Transplantation stimulates interstitial cell migration in hydra

    Get PDF
Migration of interstitial cells and nerve cell precursors was analyzed in Hydra magnipapillata and Hydra vulgaris (formerly Hydra attenuata). Axial grafts were made between [3H]thymidine-labeled donor and unlabeled host tissue. Migration of labeled cells into the unlabeled half was followed for 4 days. The results indicate that the rate of migration was initially high and then slowed on Days 2–4. Regrafting fresh donor tissue on Days 2–4 maintained high levels of migration. Thus, migration appears to be stimulated by the grafting procedure itself

Days of our lives: Family experiences of digital technology use

© 2018 Association for Computing Machinery. This paper describes findings from a workshop, with 11 parents of children under 12 years of age, that explored family experiences of digital technology use. We found that technology experiences within everyday family life are complicated and interlinked. We highlight four experiences that featured most prominently with our participants: apprehension, ambivalence, compromise and conflict. In addition, we discuss how family values govern these experiences and how families use digital technology. This work contributes to current understandings of how family values guide technology practices. These early findings suggest that deeper understandings of family values; how they are shared, negotiated and put into action, will help inform the design of future technologies that not only support families' practices and activities, but also their experiences and aspirations

Halting Planet Migration in the Evacuated Centers of Protoplanetary Disks

Precise Doppler searches for extrasolar planets find a surfeit of planets with orbital periods of 3-4 days, and no planets with orbital periods less than 3 days. The circumstellar distance, R_0, where small grains in a protoplanetary disk reach sublimation temperature (~1500 K) corresponds to a period of ~6 days. Interior to R_0, turbulent accretion due to magneto-rotational instability may evacuate the disk center. We suggest that planets with orbital periods of 3-4 days are so common because migrating planets halt once this evacuated region contains the sites of their exterior 2:1 Lindblad resonances.Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure, to appear in ApJ letter

A comparison between omeprazole and a dietary supplement for the management of squamous gastric ulceration in horses

Although several studies have assessed the short-term effect of dietary supplements on the treatment and prevention of gastric ulceration in horses, few have assessed the response over a duration of more than 30 days. A blinded randomized noninferiority clinical trial was conducted using 42 Thoroughbred horses in race training with squamous ulceration of ≥ grade 2/4, randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups for a period of 90 days: omeprazole at the full label dose of 4 mg/kg or the Succeed digestive conditioning supplement. Noninferiority analyses and Wilcoxon sign rank tests were used to analyze the data. At day 90, Succeed was noninferior to 4 mg/kg omeprazole administered daily in terms of the proportion of horses with complete resolution of squamous ulceration. At day 30, Succeed was found to be inferior to omeprazole in terms of the proportion of horses with grade ≤1/4 squamous ulceration. The proportion of horses with reducing squamous ulcer score (compared with day 0) was statistically significant for both treatments at days 30 and 60. At day 90 of the 17 horses on Succeed, nine had a reducing squamous ulcer score (P value = .049), and of the 19 horses on omeprazole, 10 had a reducing squamous ulcer score at day 90 (P value = .091). The noninferiority of Succeed compared to omeprazole at 90 days for the complete resolution of squamous ulceration and the reduced efficacy of omeprazole following 90 days of treatment are likely to be of interest to practitioners managing gastric ulceration in performance horses
