Why can't every year be a National Year of Reading? An evaluation of the NYR in Yorkshire

    Get PDF
An evaluation of the National Year of Reading in Yorkshire was conducted by Leeds Metropolitan University in response to a brief from Museums, Libraries and Archives, Yorkshire. This paper outlines the development and planning of phase one of this small scale qualitative research project and the analysis of the initial results which looks at the impact of NYR on the organisations that delivered the campaign and their work with target groups. The Generic Social Outcomes and the National Indicators were used to develop a theoretical framework. Data were gathered via in depth interviews and focus groups with NYR steering group partners in Calderdale and North Lincolnshire, selected as the two case study authorities. The use of MAXQDA computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) enabled data and coding structures to be stored and will facilitate comparison in this longitudinal study. This evaluation will provide material that local library authorities can use for advocacy with a range of audiences including local and central government

This paper describes the organisational and playback features of Físchlár, a digital video library that allows users to record, browse and watch television programmes online. Programmes that can be watched and recorded are organised by personal recommendations, genre classifications, name and other attributes for access by general television users. Motivations and interactions of users with online television libraries are outlined and they are also supported by personalised library access, categorised programmes, a combined player browser with content viewing history and content marks. The combined player browser supports a user who watches a programme on different occasions in a non-sequential order

Hydromechanics of low-Reynolds-number flow. Part 5. Motion of a slender torus

    Get PDF
In order to elucidate the general Stokes flow characteristics present for slender bodies of finite centre-line curvature the singularity method for Stokes flow has been employed to construct solutions to the flow past a slender torus. The symmetry of the geometry and absence of ends has made a highly accurate analysis possible. The no-slip boundary condition on the body surface is satisfied up to an error term of O(E^2 ln E), where E is the slenderness parameter (ratio of cross-sectional radius to centre-line radius). This degree of accuracy makes it possible to determine the force per unit length experienced by the torus up to a term of O(E^2). A comparison is made between the force coefficients of the slender torus to those of a straight slender body to illustrate the large differences that may occur as a result of the finite centre-line curvature

    Alkylresorcinols in cereal grains

Alkylresorcinols are phenolic lipids present at levels of up to 0.15% of whole grain wheat and rye, but little is known about their presence in food, absorption in animals and humans, and their in vivo biological effects. Because alkylresorcinols are present in the human diet in significant amounts only in products containing whole grain wheat or rye, they have potential to be biomarkers of whole grain wheat and rye intake. This thesis describes some of the research undertaken to investigate whether alkylresorcinols could be biomarkers of whole grain wheat and rye intake. A rapid gas chromatographic method was developed to analyse alkylresorcinols in whole cereal grains. This method was then applied to detect the presence and amount of alkylresorcinols in several cereal grains. Wheat, rye and triticale all contain moderate to high amounts of alkylresorcinols (300-1500 µg/g), while barley contains low amounts (~50 µg/g). In these cereals, alkylresorcinols are present in the bran fraction. All other cereals analysed (rice, oats, maize, sorghum and millet) did not contain any detectable amounts of alkylresorcinols. Previous studies have suggested that alkylresorcinols are destroyed by the baking process. However, an extraction method using hot propanol:water was able to recover all alkylresorcinols from experimental breads, indicating that alkylresorcinols are not destroyed during baking. The absorption of alkylresorcinols in rats, pigs and humans was determined, with values for absorption ranging from 34–79%, depending on the model and the amount of alkylresorcinols consumed. Alkylresorcinols in the plasma of pigs fed a single meal of rye, peaked at 3-4 hours, and remained elevated compared to the baseline levels after 16 hours. Preliminary studies to find alkylresorcinol metabolites in humans suggest that they have their alkyl chains shortened by β-oxidation. The effect of purified rye alkylresorcinols on lipid parameters (tocopherols, cholesterol and fatty acids) was tested on a rat model. Alkylresorcinols did not appear to affect rat performance, but in high amounts they could decrease liver cholesterol, and moderately elevate γ-tocopherol levels. Overall, the results suggest that alkylresorcinols do not have a large effect on lipid absorption/metabolism in rats

The RAVE survey: the Galactic escape speed and the mass of the Milky Way

We construct new estimates on the Galactic escape speed at various Galactocentric radii using the latest data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE DR4). Compared to previous studies we have a database larger by a factor of 10 as well as reliable distance estimates for almost all stars. Our analysis is based on the statistical analysis of a rigorously selected sample of 90 high-velocity halo stars from RAVE and a previously published data set. We calibrate and extensively test our method using a suite of cosmological simulations of the formation of Milky Way-sized galaxies. Our best estimate of the local Galactic escape speed, which we define as the minimum speed required to reach three virial radii R340R_{340}, is 53341+54533^{+54}_{-41} km/s (90% confidence) with an additional 5% systematic uncertainty, where R340R_{340} is the Galactocentric radius encompassing a mean over-density of 340 times the critical density for closure in the Universe. From the escape speed we further derive estimates of the mass of the Galaxy using a simple mass model with two options for the mass profile of the dark matter halo: an unaltered and an adiabatically contracted Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) sphere. If we fix the local circular velocity the latter profile yields a significantly higher mass than the un-contracted halo, but if we instead use the statistics on halo concentration parameters in large cosmological simulations as a constraint we find very similar masses for both models. Our best estimate for M340M_{340}, the mass interior to R340R_{340} (dark matter and baryons), is 1.30.3+0.4×10121.3^{+0.4}_{-0.3} \times 10^{12} M_\odot (corresponding to M200=1.60.4+0.5×1012M_{200} = 1.6^{+0.5}_{-0.4} \times 10^{12} M_\odot). This estimate is in good agreement with recently published independent mass estimates based on the kinematics of more distant halo stars and the satellite galaxy Leo I.Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
