    Genetic Algorithm for Orthogonal Designs

    We show how to use Simple Genetic Algorithm to produce Hadamard matrices of large orders, from teh full orthogonal design or oder 16 with 9 variables, OD(16; 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2). The objective functionthat we use in our implementation of Simple Genetic Algorithm, comes from a Computational Algebra formalism of the full orthogonal design equations. In particular, we constructed Hadamard matrices of orders 144, 176, 208, 240, 272, 304 and 336, from the aforementioned orthogonal design. By varying three genetic operator parameters, we computer 62 inequivalent Hadamard matices of order 304 and 4 inequivalent Hadamard matrices of order 336. Therefore we established two new constructive lower bounds for the numbers of Hadamard matrices of order 304 and 336

    Multiple satellite observations of oceanic planetary waves: techniques and findings

    Recent satellite-based observations of oceanic planetary waves have improved our knowledge of the wave properties and lead to advancements in the theory. Firstly, we review some of the techniques adopted to extract the information on planetary wave properties, illustrating them with examples based on satellite altimeter data, and we summarize the main findings. Then we discuss a cross-spectral approach for the comparison of the wave signals in the different datasets (altimetry, ocean colour and sea surface temperature) that is necessary to unveil the causes of the newly found wave signature in satellite-derived maps of phytoplankton chlorophyll, a discovery that is attracting considerable interest as it implies some effects of the waves on biology

    Evaluating and combining digital video shot boundary detection algorithms

    The development of standards for video encoding coupled with the increased power of computing mean that content-based manipulation of digital video information is now feasible. Shots are a basic structural building block of digital video and the boundaries between shots need to be determined automatically to allow for content-based manipulation. A shot can be thought of as continuous images from one camera at a time. In this paper we examine a variety of automatic techniques for shot boundary detection that we have implemented and evaluated on a baseline of 720,000 frames (8 hours) of broadcast television. This extends our previous work on evaluating a single technique based on comparing colour histograms. A description of each of our three methods currently working is given along with how they are evaluated. It is found that although the different methods have about the same order of magnitude in terms of effectiveness, different shot boundaries are detected by the different methods. We then look at combining the three shot boundary detection methods to produce one output result and the benefits in accuracy and performance that this brought to our system. Each of the methods were changed from using a static threshold value for three unconnected methods to one using three dynamic threshold values for one connected method. In a final summing up we look at the future directions for this work

    Chromosomal aberrations in transitional cell carcinoma that are predictive of disease outcome are independent of polyploidy

    Objective To determine whether aneusomy for chromosomes 7, 9 and 17 (reported to predict recurrence in up to 65% of patients with superficial transitional cell bladder cancer and thus providing the opportunity for early and effective treatment) reflects specific genetic events on these chromosomes or merely wider unspecific genetic damage to the cell, e.g. that increased copy numbers for 7 and 17 reflect tumour polyploidy. Materials and methods The study comprised 25 primary tumours; 6 mu m thick sections from formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tumours were analysed. Chromosome copy numbers were determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using pericentromeric probes for chromosomes 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 17. A minimum of 200 nuclei per tumour area were scored by two independent observers. Results Eight of the 25 tumours examined (32%) showed no evidence of chromosomal abnormalities as detected by FISH for any chromosomes analysed. Twelve tumours (48%) showed abnormalities for one or two chromosomes, five tumours (20%) showed abnormalities for multiple chromosomes and one tumour showed abnormalities for all chromosomes analysed, suggestive of polyploidy. Conclusions Chromosomal abnormalities predictive of recurrence occur largely in the absence of other gross chromosomal lesions. In a small proportion of cases other chromosomes are affected, but this is almost always distinct from tumour polyploidy

    Fluid mechanics of waste water disposal in the ocean

    Outfall pipes into the ocean are analogous to chimneys in the atmosphere: they are each intended for returning contaminated fluids to the environment in a way that promotes adequate transport and dispersion of the waste fluids. A waste-water treatment plant and an adjoining outfall constitute a system for environmental control; it is practically never feasible to provide such complete treatment that an outfall is not necessary, nor is it common to depend entirely on an outfall with no treatment. Although outfalls and chimneys are functionally similar, there are important differences in their relationships to the coastal waters and atmosphere respectively. Urban and industrial areas, generating waste water, are located along the shallow edge of the ocean, with often tens or even hundreds of kilometers of continental shelf between the shoreline and the deep ocean. The bottom slope on the shelf is typically less than one percent. Thus outfalls extending several kilometers offshore discharge into a body of water of large lateral extent compared to the depth, and are still remote from the main body of ocean water. In contrast, most atmospheric contaminants are introduced at the base of the atmosphere and circulate throughout the whole atmosphere much more readily. Vertical convection mixes the troposphere rapidly in most places and the wind systems circulate the air around the globe in a matter of weeks. Outfalls and chimneys are useful in reducing pollutant concentrations only locally. Far away from the sources, it makes little difference how the pollutants are discharged. The decay times of the pollutants are important in the choice of effective discharge strategies. For example, the problems of very persistent contaminants such as DDT cannot be alleviated by dispersion from an outfall; such pollutants must be intercepted at the source and prevented from entering the environment. On the other hand, degradable organic wastes, as in domestic sewage, may be effectively disposed of through a good ocean outfall.     Detection of antibody-dependent complement mediated inactivation of both autologous and heterologous virus in primary HIV-1 infection

    Specific CD8 T-cell responses to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) are induced in primary infection and make an important contribution to the control of early viral replication. The importance of neutralizing antibodies in containing primary viremia is questioned because they usually arise much later. Nevertheless antienvelope antibodies develop simultaneously with, or even before, peak viremia. We determined whether such antibodies might control viremia by complement-mediated inactivation (CMI). In each of seven patients studied, antibodies capable of CMI appeared at or shortly after the peak in viremia, concomitantly with detection of virus-specific T-cell responses. The CMI was effective on both autologous and heterologous HIV-1 isolates. Activation of the classical pathway and direct viral lysis were at least partly responsible. Since immunoglobulin G (IgG)-antibodies triggered the CMI, specific memory B cells could also be induced by vaccination. Thus, consideration should be given to vaccination strategies that induce IgG antibodies capable of CMI

    Cross-linguistic study of vocal pathology: perceptual features of spasmodic dysphonia in French-speaking subjects

    Clinical characterisation of Spasmodic Dysphonia of the adductor type (SD) in French speakers by Klap and colleagues (1993) appears to differ from that of SD in English. This perceptual analysis aims to describe the phonetic features of French SD. A video of 6 French speakers with SD supplied by Klap and colleagues was analysed for frequency of phonatory breaks, pitch breaks, harshness, creak, breathiness and falsetto voice, rate of production, and quantity of speech output. In contrast to English SD, the French speaking SD patients demonstrated no evidence pitch breaks, but phonatory breaks, harshness and breathiness were prominent features. This verifies the French authors’ (1993) clinical description. These findings suggest that phonetic properties of a specific language may affect the manifestation of pathology in neurogenic voice disorders
