Renormalization Group and Grand Unification with 331 Models
By making a renormalization group analysis we explore the possibility of
having a 331 model as the only intermediate gauge group between the standard
model and the scale of unification of the three coupling constants. We shall
assume that there is no necessarily a group of grand unification at the scale
of convergence of the couplings. With this scenario, different 331 models and
their corresponding supersymmetric versions are considered, and we find the
versions that allow the symmetry breaking described above. Besides, the allowed
interval for the 331 symmetry breaking scale, and the behavior of the running
coupling constants are obtained. It worths saying that some of the
supersymmetric scenarios could be natural frameworks for split supersymmetry.
Finally, we look for possible 331 models with a simple group at the grand
unification scale, that could fit the symmetry breaking scheme described above.Comment: 18 pages. 3 figures. Some results reinterpreted, a new section and

An automatic technique for visual quality classification for MPEG-1 video
The Centre for Digital Video Processing at Dublin City University developed Fischlar [1], a web-based system for recording, analysis, browsing and playback of digitally captured television programs. One major issue for Fischlar is the automatic evaluation of video quality in order to avoid processing and storage of corrupted data. In this paper we propose an automatic classification technique that detects the video content quality in order to provide a decision criterion for the processing and storage stages
Prayer and psychological health: a study among sixth-form pupils attending Catholic and Protestant schools in Northern Ireland
Eysenck's dimensional model of personality includes two indicators of psychological health, defined as neuroticism and psychoticism. In order to examine the association between psychological health and prayer, two samples of sixth-form pupils in Northern Ireland (16- to 18-year-olds) attending Catholic (N = 1246) and Protestant (N = 1060) schools completed the abbreviated Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire alongside a simple measure of prayer frequency. The data demonstrated a positive association between prayer frequency and better levels of psychological health as assessed by Eysenck's notion of psychoticism. Among pupils attending both Catholic and Protestant schools, higher levels of prayer were associated with lower psychoticism scores. Among pupils attending Catholic schools, however, higher levels of prayer were also associated with higher neuroticism scores
Chandra Observations of the Faintest Low-Mass X-ray Binaries
There exists a group of persistently faint galactic X-ray sources that, based
on their location in the galaxy, high L_x/L_opt, association with X-ray bursts,
and absence of low frequency X-ray pulsations, are thought to be low-mass X-ray
binaries (LMXBs). We present results from Chandra observations for eight of
these systems: 4U 1708-408, 2S 1711-339, KS 1739-304, SLX 1735-269, GRS
1736-297, SLX 1746-331, 1E 1746.7-3224, and 4U 1812-12. Locations for all
sources, excluding GRS 1736-297, SLX 1746-331, and KS 1739-304 (which were not
detected) were improved to 0.6" error circles (90% confidence). Our
observations support earlier findings of transient behavior of GRS 1736-297, KS
1739-304, SLX 1746-331, and 2S 1711-339 (which we detect in one of two
observations). Energy spectra for 4U 1708-408, 2S 1711-339, SLX 1735-269, 1E
1746.7-3224, and 4U 1812-12 are hard, with power law indices typically 1.4-2.1,
which are consistent with typical faint LMXB spectra.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures. Accepted by Ap
