Method to determine the optimal parameters of the Arecibo 46.8-MHz antenna system

    Get PDF
The spherical reflector at the Arecibo Observatory (AO) offers great advantages for the design of simple and inexpensive high performance steerable antennas at VHF. Light and small feeds have the added benefit that they can be quickly installed in the Arecibo platform. It is important to evaluate the performance of any given feed including the effects of the spherical reflector. The optimization is emphasized of two parameters, namely, the distance below the focal point of the reflector and the beam width of a point feed. For the design of the feed at 46.8 MHz at the AO there were other requirements independent of MST (mesosphere stratosphere troposphere) work. The design of the primary array is discussed along with its performance with the AO spherical reflector

A search for J^{PC}=1^{-+} exotic mesons in the pi- pi- pi+ and pi- pi0 pi0 systems

A partial wave analysis (PWA) of the pi-pi-pi+ and pi-pi0pi0 systems produced in the reaction pi- p -> (3pi)-p at 18 GeV/c was carried out using an isobar model assumption. This analysis is based on 3.0M pi-pi0pi0 events and 2.6M pi-pi-pi+ events and shows production of the a2(1320), pi2(1670) and \pi(1800) mesons. An earlier analysis of 250K pi-pi-pi+ events from the same experiment showed possible evidence for a J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ exotic meson with a mass of 1.6 GeV/c^2 decaying into rho pi. In this analysis of a higher statistics sample of the (3pi)- system in two charged modes we find no evidence of an exotic meson.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, added comment about the negative reflectivity exotic wave

Patterns of creation and usage of wikipedia content

This is the Post-print version of the Article. The official Published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEWikipedia is the largest online service storing user-generated content. Its pages are open to anyone for addition, deletion and modifications, and the effort of contributors is recorded and can be tracked in time. Although potentially the Wikipedia web content could exhibit unbounded growth, it is still not clear whether the effort of developers and the output generated are actually following patterns of continuous growth. It is also not clear how the users access such content, and if recurring patterns of usage are detectable showing how the Wikipedia content typically is viewed by interested readers. Using the category of Wikipedia as macro-agglomerates, this study reveals that Wikipedia categories face a decreasing growth trend over time, after an initial, exponential phase of development. On the other hand the study demonstrates that the number of views to the pages within the categories follow a linear, unbounded growth. The link between software usefulness and the need for software maintenance over time has been established by Lehman and other; the link betweenWikipedia usage and changes to the content, unlike software, appear to follow a two-phase evolution of production followed by consumption. This study is partly funded by the University of East London

Measurement of collective flow in heavy ion collisions using particle pair correlations

    Get PDF
We present a new type of flow analysis, based on a particle-pair correlation function, in which there is no need for an event-by-event determination of the reaction plane. Consequently, the need to correct for dispersion in an estimated reaction plane does not arise. Our method also offers the option to avoid any influence from particle misidentification. Using this method, streamer chamber data for collisions of Ar+KCl and Ar+BaI2 at 1.2 GeV/nucleon are compared with predictions of a nuclear transport model

    High-spin binary black hole mergers

We study identical mass black hole binaries with spins perpendicular to the binary's orbital plane. These binaries have individual spins ranging from s/m2=0.90s/m^2=-0.90 to 0.90, (s1=s2s_1 = s_2 in all cases) which is near the limit possible with standard Bowen-York puncture initial data. The extreme cases correspond to the largest initial spin simulations to date. Our results expand the parameter space covered by Rezzolla {\it et al.} and, when combining both data sets, we obtain estimations for the minimum and maximum values for the intrinsic angular momenta of the remnant of binary black hole mergers of J/M2=0.341±0.004J/M^2=0.341 \pm 0.004 and 0.951±0.0040.951 \pm 0.004 respectively. Note, however, that these values are reached through extrapolation to the singular cases s1=s2=1|s_1| = |s_2| = 1 and thus remain as {\it estimates} until full-fledged numerical simulations provide confirmation.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Network Sketching: Exploiting Binary Structure in Deep CNNs

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with deep architectures have substantially advanced the state-of-the-art in computer vision tasks. However, deep networks are typically resource-intensive and thus difficult to be deployed on mobile devices. Recently, CNNs with binary weights have shown compelling efficiency to the community, whereas the accuracy of such models is usually unsatisfactory in practice. In this paper, we introduce network sketching as a novel technique of pursuing binary-weight CNNs, targeting at more faithful inference and better trade-off for practical applications. Our basic idea is to exploit binary structure directly in pre-trained filter banks and produce binary-weight models via tensor expansion. The whole process can be treated as a coarse-to-fine model approximation, akin to the pencil drawing steps of outlining and shading. To further speedup the generated models, namely the sketches, we also propose an associative implementation of binary tensor convolutions. Experimental results demonstrate that a proper sketch of AlexNet (or ResNet) outperforms the existing binary-weight models by large margins on the ImageNet large scale classification task, while the committed memory for network parameters only exceeds a little.Comment: To appear in CVPR201

Effects of increasing fertilization in organic farming fodder cultivation and market crop systems

    Get PDF
In 1992, on experimental stations of the Saxony State Institute of Agriculture, two organic field trials were set up on loamy sand and a loess loam in western Saxony, eastern Germany. In these long-term field trials questions of fodder cultivation and market crop systems, crop rotations with legume-grass, wheat and maize, different organic fertilizer regimes and nutrient cycling were analyzed regarding their effects on soil fertility, yield and quality of the plant products. The main results and conclusions of the first nine years of these organic field trials are introduced and summarized here
