Extreme Blazars Studied with Fermi-LAT and Suzaku: 1ES 0347-121 and Blazar Candidate HESS J1943+213

We report on our study of high-energy properties of two peculiar TeV emitters: the "extreme blazar" 1ES 0347-121 and the "extreme blazar candidate" HESS J1943+213 located near the Galactic Plane. Both objects are characterized by quiescent synchrotron emission with flat spectra extending up to the hard X-ray range, and both were reported to be missing GeV counterparts in the Fermi-LAT 2-year Source Catalog. We analyze a 4.5 year accumulation of the Fermi-LAT data, resulting in the detection of 1ES 0347-121 in the GeV band, as well as in improved upper limits for HESS J1943+213. We also present the analysis results of newly acquired Suzaku data for HESS J1943+213. The X-ray spectrum is well represented by a single power law extending up to 25 keV with photon index 2.00+/-0.02 and a moderate absorption in excess of the Galactic value, in agreement with previous X-ray observations. No short-term X-ray variability was found over the 80 ks duration of the Suzaku exposure. Under the blazar hypothesis, we modeled the spectral energy distributions of 1ES 0347-121 and HESS J1943+213, and derived constraints on the intergalactic magnetic field strength and source energetics. We conclude that although the classification of HESS J1943+213 has not yet been determined, the blazar hypothesis remains the most plausible option, since in particular the broad-band spectra of the two analyzed sources along with the source model parameters closely resemble each other, and the newly available WISE and UKIDSS data for HESS J1943+213 are consistent with the presence of an elliptical host at the distance of approximately ~600 Mpc.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Fault diagnosis technology based on transistor behavior analysis for physical analysis

    Get PDF
The novel method has been developed to detect accuracy fault elements in transistor level circuit, analyzing the characteristics of circuit operation influenced on leakage fault and being combined with diagnosis software, based on switching level simulation. This method is based on behavior of CMOS transistor to which applied unstable voltage produced by leakage fault. Unsettled logic brings the transistor’s operation point to saturation area with multi-impedance value and forms penetration current nets passing through it. Output value on the net is calculated with each element impedance value and miss-logic signal is spread to output terminal. An evaluation of this technology corroborates to be precise method by using the circuit in which embedded arbitrary fault portions

The world turned upside-down : architects as subcontractors in design-and-build contracts

The traditional role of the Architect on UK building projects is well-known and has been the subject of much study and comment. However, recent surveys indicate that design-and-build arrangements now exceed traditional procurement in terms of their share of total UK construction. On such projects, architects and other designers are engaged, not by the employer, but under sub-contract to the main contractor. The question arises as to the effect this has had. This has been approached by considering architects and other design consultants as professional contractors, as opposed to trade contractors - a term adopted to describe the more traditional type of subcontractor. Within these distinctions there are contractual, managerial and cultural implications for the relationships between the parties. To explore this further, representatives of five main contractors were questioned on their relationships with the two types. Clear differences emerged in matters such as contract formation, price-setting, payment and claims; the treatment of selection, work scheduling, and defects / omissions was more complicated. Within trade contractors there is a strong argument for recognising a further category of specialist contractors, who include a design service in their work package. Within the professional contractor category, architects were clearly differentiated from other design team members. The findings are analysed to suggest a theoretical framework with four dimensions that relate to process/product, attitude/motivation, working culture and relative power. The concern is not to be definitive at this stage, but to suggest an agenda for future research into the issues that have emerged

Measurements and Simulations of Wave Propagation in Agitated Granular Beds

Wave propagation in a granular bed is a complicated, highly nonlinear phenomenon. Yet studies of wave propagation provide important information on the characteristics of these materials. Fundamental nonlinearities of the bed include those in the particle contact model and the fact that there exists zero applied force when grains are out of contact. The experimental work of Liu and Nagal showed the strong dependence of wave propagation on the forming and breaking of particle chains. As a result of the nonlinearities, anomalous behavior such as solitary waves and sonic vacuum have been predicted by Nesterenko. In the present work we examine wave propagation in a granular bed subjected to vertical agitation. The agitation produces continual adjustment of force chains in the bed. Wave propagation speed and attenuation measurements were made for such a system for a range of frequencies considerably higher than that used for the agitation. Both laboratory experiments and simulations (using a two-dimensional, discrete soft-particle model) have been used. The present paper is a progress report on the simulations

Electron heating mode transitions in dual frequency capacitive discharges

    Get PDF
The authors consider electron heating in the sheath regions of capacitive discharges excited by a combination of two frequencies, one much higher than the other. There is a common supposition that in such discharges the higher frequency is the dominant source of electron heating. In this letter, the authors discuss closed analytic expressions quantifying the Ohmic and collisionless electron heating in a dual frequency discharge. In both cases, the authors show that the lower frequency parameters strongly influence the heating effect. Moreover, this influence is parametrically different, so that the dominant heating mechanism may be changed by varying the low frequency current density

GenePath: a System for Automated Construction of Genetic Networks from Mutant Data

    Get PDF
Motivation: Genetic pathways are often used in the analysis of biological phenomena. In classical genetics, they are constructed manually from experimental data on mutants. The field lacks formalism to guide such analysis, and accounting for all the data becomes complicated when large amounts of data are considered. Results: We have developed GenePath, an intelligent assistant that mimics expert geneticists in the analysis of genetic data. GenePath employs expert-defined patterns to uncover gene relations from the data, and uses these relations as constraints that guide the search for a plausible genetic network. GenePath provides formalism to genetic data analysis, facilitates the consideration of all the available data in a consistent and systematic manner, and aids in the examination of the large number of possible consequences of a planned experiment. It also provides an explanation mechanism that traces back every finding to the pertinent data. GenePath was successfully tested on several genetic problems.
