    Get PDF
The symposium Reconstructing Lincoln Log Cabin: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Coles County traced the origins of Lincoln Log Cabin and the activities of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Coles County, Illinois. Students researched, designed, and implemented all phases of the symposium held at the Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site on Saturday, November 2011 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The Historical Administration Program at Eastern Illinois University and the Lincoln-Sargent Farm Foundation jointly sponsored the symposium. Selected students made formal power-point presentations and facilitated questions from the audience at the conclusion of their presentations. The students unearthed a wealth of new information and presented a layered interpretation of the site\u27s history and the CCC as a case study of national history localized. The presentations focused on the community groups and individuals involved in creating the site, the construction of buildings by the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1934-35, and ended with the public opening in August 1936

In the late 90\u27s hip-hop started as a form of encouragement and empowerment for black people who struggled when growing up. Hip Hop gave black people a voice, where their opinions and challenges could be heard throughout the world. Today the genre of Hip-hop music has developed into a negative image that degrades women and negatively influences the younger black community. Think about some of the hip-hop music at the top of the charts; the songs that disrespect woman, and contains far too much explicit content that it has society desensitized. The pervasiveness of today\u27 s hip-hop has soaked into society\u27s head that it\u27s ok for hip-hop music to be portrayed this way while the executive producers behind the hip-hop industry are making billions by exploiting music they know people have become accustomed to. But the question is; why do artist/men in hip-hop feel they need to disrespect women and rap about inappropriate material in order to have power in the hip-hop industry

English Pedagogy at Eastern Illinois State Normal School: The Unique Evolution and Effect of an Adapted Composition Course

In his book, Professing Literature, Gerald Graff discusses that from 1890-1915 there was disagreement between generalists, who, as Graff states, tended to dispense with elaborate pedagogical theories and ... let the great masterpieces of literature teach themselves (Graff 86), and scholars, who were primarily philologists. While the generalists believed the study of literature should result in appreciation and a more cultured student, the scholars were primarily researchers. Graff goes on to describe the additional conflict between critics and scholars that grew out of the development of criticism between 1915-1930. Within the group of critics, Graff identifies humanists, who supported a generalist approach to literature, and aesthetic formalists, who focused on the structure of a text to better understand it. By determining where the Eastern Illinois State Normal School faculty stood on these issues, it will become possible to begin to put together a picture of how the Normal School pedagogy may have evolved differently than that of faculties at the research-based schools Graff focuses on. Isabel McKinney\u27s articles in the Normal School Bulletin, as well as two textbooks for both middle and high school English, which she wrote with Thomas Briggs, have been useful in determining the answers to these questions

Gatsby and JAZZ: One Coin, Two Sides

    F. Scott Fitzgerald\u27s The Great Gatsby and Toni Morrison\u27s JAZZ both tell the story of the American 1920s, but from opposite points of view. Fitzgerald and Morrison offer two compelling narratives of the societal shift that took place in post-World War 1-era America, but although the accounts share the same general topic and historical era, it is otherwise difficult to reconcile the two American portraits that have been painted. It is as though the two authors are giving a description of the same coin, but one describes the front and the other describes the back. To the white population this decade was the Jazz Age, a time of disillusioned self-indulgence. But to the black community it was the Harlem Renaissance, a time of discovery and of the rebirth of the African-American identity

The emergence ofthe digital camera has made photography less expensive, faster, and easier to share. Technology and material upgrades aside, many self-described photographers do not have the slightest idea about what goes on beyond the obvious. What I am referring to is the design and compositional elements of photographs. What makes a shot and its\u27 editing successful? Why? How do you follow the rules and mix in personal touch? As a young aspiring artist on the verge of entering the cut-throat world of photography I feel the need to express my knowledge of design to make a successful career out of art

News-gathering for the American public changed in the past decade with a decline in trust for journalists and news media (Jones 2009), technology advancement (Haynes and Pitts 2009), and entertainment becoming a priority (Jones 2009; Haynes and Pitts 2009; Baumgartner and Morris 2006; Colletta 2009). Television, radio, and newspapers (the traditional media) are still used today with broadcast and cable television being the dominate news source (Colletta 2009; Haynes and Pitts 2009), however, an increased amount of Americans utilize the internet for their news information through what is known as new media, referring to Web blogs and social networks. Haynes and Pitts (2009) found that 55% of the public went online during the 2008 Presidential Elections to get their political news and information on candidates. Those who like political information will have greater ease in finding it [online], while those who prefer entertainment and the like will as well (Haynes and Pitts 2009, 53). People, however, are finding that entertainment aspect in news-gathering within traditional media. Soft news, in particularly political satire television, is becoming increasingly popular as news-gathering sources. Colletta defined satire as a form that holds up human vices and follies to ridicule, a criticism of any stupidity or vice in the form of scathing humor, and a critique of what an author sees as dangerous religious, political, moral, or social standards. Comedy and satire differ in that comedy evokes laughter, while satire uses laughter as a weapon (859). Parody, seen in sketch comedy in Saturday Night Live, is therefore satiric
