    Tables of nuclear cross sections for galactic cosmic rays: Absorption cross sections

    A simple but comprehensive theory of nuclear reactions is presented. Extensive tables of nucleon, deuteron, and heavy-ion absorption cross sections over a broad range of energies are generated for use in cosmic ray shielding studies. Numerous comparisons of the calculated values with available experimental data show agreement to within 3 percent for energies above 80 MeV/nucleon and within approximately 10 percent for energies as low as 30 MeV/nucleon. These tables represent the culmination of the development of the absorption cross section formalism and supersede the preliminary absorption cross sections published previously in NASA TN D-8107, NASA TP-2138, and NASA TM-84636

    Interdisciplinary approach to the demography of Jamaica

    <p>Background: The trans-Atlantic slave trade dramatically changed the demographic makeup of the New World, with varying regions of the African coast exploited differently over roughly a 400 year period. When compared to the discrete mitochondrial haplotype distribution of historically appropriate source populations, the unique distribution within a specific source population can prove insightful in estimating the contribution of each population. Here, we analyzed the first hypervariable region of mitochondrial DNA in a sample from the Caribbean island of Jamaica and compared it to aggregated populations in Africa divided according to historiographically defined segments of the continent's coastline. The results from these admixture procedures were then compared to the wealth of historic knowledge surrounding the disembarkation of Africans on the island.</p> <p>Results: In line with previous findings, the matriline of Jamaica is almost entirely of West African descent. Results from the admixture analyses suggest modern Jamaicans share a closer affinity with groups from the Gold Coast and Bight of Benin despite high mortality, low fecundity, and waning regional importation. The slaves from the Bight of Biafra and West-central Africa were imported in great numbers; however, the results suggest a deficit in expected maternal contribution from those regions.</p> <p>Conclusions: When considering the demographic pressures imposed by chattel slavery on Jamaica during the slave era, the results seem incongruous. Ethnolinguistic and ethnographic evidence, however, may explain the apparent non-random levels of genetic perseverance. The application of genetics may prove useful in answering difficult demographic questions left by historically voiceless groups.</p&gt

    Regioselective trans-Hydrostannation of Boron-Capped Alkynes

    Alkynyl-B(aam) (aam=anthranilamidato) derivatives are readily available bench-stable compounds that undergo remarkably selective reactions with Bu3SnH in the presence of [Cp*RuCl]4 as the catalyst. The addition follows a stereochemically unorthodox trans-selective course; in terms of regioselectivity, the Bu3Sn- unit is delivered with high fidelity to the C-atom of the triple bond adjacent to the boracyclic head group (“alpha,trans-addition”). This outcome is deemed to reflect a hydrogen bonding interaction between the protic −NH groups of the benzo-1,3,2-diazaborininone ring system and the polarized [Ru−Cl] bond in the loaded catalyst, which locks the substrate in place in a favorable orientation relative to the incoming reagent. The resulting isomerically (almost) pure gem-dimetalated building blocks are amenable to numerous downstream functionalizations; most remarkable is the ability to subject the −B(aam) moiety to Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling without need for prior hydrolysis while keeping the adjacent Bu3Sn- group intact. Alternatively, the tin residue can be engaged in selective tin/halogen exchange without touching the boron substituent; the fact that the two -NH entities of −B(aam) do not protonate organozinc reagents and hence do not interfere with Negishi reactions of the alkenyl halides thus formed is another virtue of this so far underutilized boracycle. Overall, the ruthenium catalyzed trans-hydrostannation of alkynyl-B(aam) derivatives opens a practical gateway to isomerically pure trisubstituted alkenes of many different substitution patterns by sequential functionalization of the 1-alkenyl-1,1-heterobimetallic adducts primarily formed

    Spectroscopy of Stellar-Like Objects Contained in the Second Byurakan Survey. I

    The results of spectroscopic observations of 363 star-like objects from the Second Byurakan Survey (SBS) are reported. This SBS's subsample has proven to be a rich source of newly identified quasars, Seyfert type galaxies, degenerate stars and hot subdwarfs. In the subsample here studied, we identified 35 new QSOs, 142 White Dwarfs (WDs) the majority of which, 114 are of DA type, 55 subdwarfs (29 of which are sdB-type stars), 10 HBB, 16 NHB, 54 G-type and 25 F-type stars, two objects with composite spectra, four Cataclismic Variables (CV), two peculiar emission line stars, 17 objects with continuous spectra, as well as one planetary nebula. Among the 35 QSOs we have found two Broad Absorption Line (BAL) QSOs, namely SBS 1423+500 and SBS 1435+500A. Magnitudes, redshifts, and slit spectra for all QSOs, also some typical spectra of the peculiar stars are presented. We estimate the minimum surface density of bright QSOs in redshift range 0.3<z<2.2 to be 0.05 per sq. deg. for B<17.0 and 0.10 per sq. deg. for B<17.5.Comment: 22 pages, 3 tables, 4 figures, PASP in pres
