The state of peer-to-peer network simulators
Networking research often relies on simulation in order to test and evaluate new ideas. An important requirement of this process is that results must be reproducible so that other researchers can replicate, validate and extend existing work. We look at the landscape of simulators for research in peer-to-peer (P2P) networks by conducting a survey of a combined total of over 280 papers from before and after 2007 (the year of the last survey in this area), and comment on the large quantity of research using bespoke, closed-source simulators. We propose a set of criteria that P2P simulators should meet, and poll the P2P research community for their agreement. We aim to drive the community towards performing their experiments on simulators that allow for others to validate their results

Occurrence of Magellanic Penguins along the Northeast Brazilian Coast during 2008 Austral Winter
During the austral winter of 2008, thousands of penguins traveled to low latitudes along the South Atlantic coast of South America. The atmospheric and oceanic conditions from April to July 2008 may account for the penguins' unusual geographic distribution. During that period, South Atlantic coastal waters were cooler; the wind anomalies had northward and onshore components; the ocean's coastal region presented northward currents that favored the penguins to travel toward lower latitudes. This anomalous climate regime resulted from extreme meteorological frontal systems that occurred mainly during June 2008. Three consecutive extreme midlatitude cyclones produced strong wind shear that resulted in the northward oceanic flow along the South American eastern shoreline favoring the penguins to be spotted in northern tropical waters
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: measuring D-A and H at z=0.57 from the baryon acoustic peak in the Data Release 9 spectroscopic Galaxy sample
We present measurements of the angular diameter distance to and Hubble parameter at z=0.57 from the measurement of the baryon acoustic peak in the correlation of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey. Our analysis is based on a sample from Data Release 9 of 264,283 galaxies over 3275 square degrees in the redshift range 0.43<z<0.70. We use two different methods to provide robust measurement of the acoustic peak position across and along the line of sight in order to measure the cosmological distance scale. We find D_A(0.57) = 1408 +/- 45 Mpc and H(0.57) = 92.9 +/- 7.8 km/s/Mpc for our fiducial value of the sound horizon. These results from the anisotropic fitting are fully consistent with the analysis of the spherically averaged acoustic peak position presented in Anderson et al, 2012. Our distance measurements are a close match to the predictions of the standard cosmological model featuring a cosmological constant and zero spatial curvature
Mississippi’s Social Transformation in Public Memories of the Trial against Byron de la Beckwith for the Murder of Medgar Evers
In 1994, Byron de la Beckwith was convicted for the 1963 murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers. Journalistic coverage of the trial and the 1996 docudrama Ghosts of Mississippi crafted a social values transformation myth that depicted Beckwith as the primary villain of the civil rights past and cast his conviction as a sign that racism had been cleansed from Mississippi. Popular media naturalized this myth intertextually though narrative repetition and through symbolic cues that established the film as a source of historic understanding. These cues deflected critical attention from contemporary social conditions that have maintained racial inequity and continue to prompt racially motivated hate crimes
The Spectral Energy Distribution of Powerful Starburst Galaxies I: Modelling the Radio Continuum
We have acquired radio continuum data between 70\,MHz and 48\,GHz for a
sample of 19 southern starburst galaxies at moderate redshifts () with the aim of separating synchrotron and free-free emission
components. Using a Bayesian framework we find the radio continuum is rarely
characterised well by a single power law, instead often exhibiting low
frequency turnovers below 500\,MHz, steepening at mid-to-high frequencies, and
a flattening at high frequencies where free-free emission begins to dominate
over the synchrotron emission. These higher order curvature components may be
attributed to free-free absorption across multiple regions of star formation
with varying optical depths. The decomposed synchrotron and free-free emission
components in our sample of galaxies form strong correlations with the
total-infrared bolometric luminosities. Finally, we find that without
accounting for free-free absorption with turnovers between 90 to 500\,MHz the
radio-continuum at low frequency (\,MHz) could be overestimated by
upwards of a factor of twelve if a simple power law extrapolation is used from
higher frequencies. The mean synchrotron spectral index of our sample is
constrained to be , which is steeper then the canonical value of
for normal galaxies. We suggest this may be caused by an intrinsically
steeper cosmic ray distribution
The Stellar Metallicity Distribution Function of the Galactic Halo from SDSS Photometry
We explore the stellar metallicity distribution function of the Galactic halo
based on SDSS ugriz photometry. A set of stellar isochrones is calibrated using
observations of several star clusters and validated by comparisons with
medium-resolution spectroscopic values over a wide range of metal abundance. We
estimate distances and metallicities for individual main-sequence stars in the
multiply scanned SDSS Stripe 82, at heliocentric distances in the range 5 - 8
kpc and |b| > 35 deg, and find that the in situ photometric metallicity
distribution has a shape that matches that of the kinematically-selected local
halo stars from Ryan & Norris. We also examine independent kinematic
information from proper-motion measurements for high Galactic latitude stars in
our sample. We find that stars with retrograde rotation in the rest frame of
the Galaxy are generally more metal poor than those exhibiting prograde
rotation, which is consistent with earlier arguments by Carollo et al. that the
halo system comprises at least two spatially overlapping components with
differing metallicity, kinematics, and spatial distributions. The observed
photometric metallicity distribution and that of Ryan & Norris can be described
by a simple chemical evolution model by Hartwick (or by a single Gaussian
distribution); however, the suggestive metallicity-kinematic correlation
contradicts the basic assumption in this model that the Milky Way halo consists
primarily of a single stellar population. When the observed metallicity
distribution is deconvolved using two Gaussian components with peaks at [Fe/H]
~ -1.7 and -2.3, the metal-poor component accounts for ~20% - 35% of the entire
