    FDTD analysis of transient fault induced travelling-wave propagation for multi-branch distribution networks

    Many methods are available to analyze the process of the travelling-wave propagation. Among these methods, the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method has a distinct advantage in calculating dynamic process of the travelling wave propagation in the time domain and is thus applied to the field of power system protection for researching transient fault induced travelling-wave propagation. The novelty of this paper is that the attenuation law of the traveling wave signal affected by the fork junction in the multi-branch distribution network is summarized and the cause of failure in the fault location based on the incipient travelling wave front method in distribution networks is found

    Innovating with Artificial Intelligence: Capturing the Constructive Functional Capabilities of Deep Generative Learning

    As an emerging species of artificial intelligence, deep generative learning models can generate an unprecedented variety of new outputs. Examples include the creation of music, text-to-image translation, or the imputation of missing data. Similar to other AI models that already evoke significant changes in society and economy, there is a need for structuring the constructive functional capabilities of DGL. To derive and discuss them, we conducted an extensive and structured literature review. Our results reveal a substantial scope of six constructive functional capabilities demonstrating that DGL is not exclusively used to generate unseen outputs. Our paper further guides companies in capturing and evaluating DGL’s potential for innovation. Besides, our paper fosters an understanding of DGL and provides a conceptual basis for further research

    Reference Exascale Architecture (Extended Version)

    While political commitments for building exascale systems have been made, turning these systems into platforms for a wide range of exascale applications faces several technical, organisational and skills-related challenges. The key technical challenges are related to the availability of data. While the first exascale machines are likely to be built within a single site, the input data is in many cases impossible to store within a single site. Alongside handling of extreme-large amount of data, the exascale system has to process data from different sources, support accelerated computing, handle high volume of requests per day, minimize the size of data flows, and be extensible in terms of continuously increasing data as well as an increase in parallel requests being sent. These technical challenges are addressed by the general reference exascale architecture. It is divided into three main blocks: virtualization layer, distributed virtual file system, and manager of computing resources. Its main property is modularity which is achieved by containerization at two levels: 1) application containers - containerization of scientific workflows, 2) micro-infrastructure - containerization of extreme-large data service-oriented infrastructure. The paper also presents an instantiation of the reference architecture - the architecture of the PROCESS project (PROviding Computing solutions for ExaScale ChallengeS) and discusses its relation to the reference exascale architecture.     Cross-Platform Implementation of an SSVEP-Based BCI for the Control of a 6-DOF Robotic Arm

    [EN] Robotics has been successfully applied in the design of collaborative robots for assistance to people with motor disabilities. However, man-machine interaction is difficult for those who suffer severe motor disabilities. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of a low-cost robotic arm control system with an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI). The BCI system relays on the Steady State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) paradigm. A cross-platform application was obtained in C++. This C++ platform, together with the open-source software Openvibe was used to control a Staubli robot arm model TX60. Communication between Openvibe and the robot was carried out through the Virtual Reality Peripheral Network (VRPN) protocol. EEG signals were acquired with the 8-channel Enobio amplifier from Neuroelectrics. For the processing of the EEG signals, Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) filters and a Linear Discriminant Analysis classifier (LDA) were used. Five healthy subjects tried the BCI. This work allowed the communication and integration of a well-known BCI development platform such as Openvibe with the specific control software of a robot arm such as Staubli TX60 using the VRPN protocol.     AquaVision : AI-powered marine species identification

    This study addresses the challenge of accurately identifying fish species by using machine learning and image classification techniques. The primary aim is to develop an innovative algorithm that can dynamically identify the most common (within Maltese coastal waters) invasive Mediterranean fish species based on available images. In particular, these include Fistularia commersonii, Lobotes surinamensis, Pomadasys incisus, Siganus luridus, and Stephanolepis diaspros, which have been adopted as this study’s target species. Through the use of machine-learning models and transfer learning, the proposed solution seeks to enable precise, on-the-spot species recognition. The methodology involved collecting and organising images as well as training the models with consistent datasets to ensure comparable results. After trying a number of models, ResNet18 was found to be the most accurate and reliable, with YOLO v8 following closely behind. While the performance of YOLO was reasonably good, it exhibited less consistency in its results. These results underline the potential of the developed algorithm to significantly aid marine biology research, including citizen science initiatives, and promote environmental management efforts through accurate fish species identification.peer-reviewe

    A Deep Spatiotemporal Attention Network for Mild Cognitive Impairment Identification

    Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a nervous system disease, and its clinical status can be used as an early warning of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Subtle and slow changes in brain structure between patients with MCI and normal controls (NCs) deprive them of effective diagnostic methods. Therefore, the identification of MCI is a challenging task. The current functional brain network (FBN) analysis to predict human brain tissue structure is a new method emerging in recent years, which provides sensitive and effective medical biomarkers for the diagnosis of neurological diseases. Therefore, to address this challenge, we propose a novel Deep Spatiotemporal Attention Network (DSTAN) framework for MCI recognition based on brain functional networks. Specifically, we first extract spatiotemporal features between brain functional signals and FBNs by designing a spatiotemporal convolution strategy (ST-CONV). Then, on this basis, we introduce a learned attention mechanism to further capture brain nodes strongly correlated with MCI. Finally, we fuse spatiotemporal features for MCI recognition. The entire network is trained in an end-to-end fashion. Extensive experiments show that our proposed method significantly outperforms current baselines and state-of-the-art methods, with a classification accuracy of 84.21%

    Sensor Technologies to Manage the Physiological Traits of Chronic Pain: A Review

    Non-oncologic chronic pain is a common high-morbidity impairment worldwide and acknowledged as a condition with significant incidence on quality of life. Pain intensity is largely perceived as a subjective experience, what makes challenging its objective measurement. However, the physiological traces of pain make possible its correlation with vital signs, such as heart rate variability, skin conductance, electromyogram, etc., or health performance metrics derived from daily activity monitoring or facial expressions, which can be acquired with diverse sensor technologies and multisensory approaches. As the assessment and management of pain are essential issues for a wide range of clinical disorders and treatments, this paper reviews different sensor-based approaches applied to the objective evaluation of non-oncological chronic pain.
