Emergency workers' experiences of the use of section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983: interpretative phenomenological investigation.

AIMS AND METHOD: To explore the experiences of emergency workers dealing with incidents in which section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 is invoked by the police. Data from interviews with police officers and ambulance workers in a London locality were subject to interpretative phenomenological analysis. RESULTS: Participants felt they were the first port of call and that training should be improved to help them deal with those experiencing mental health crises in the community. Police participants noted time pressures trying to gain individuals' trust and described section 136 detention as sometimes feeling like a betrayal of the individual. Most participants had negative experiences of admissions to the 136 suite; several suggested ways of improving the admissions system. Several went beyond their expected duties to ensure that distressed individuals were supported before accessing mental healthcare services. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Improving training of emergency workers in dealing with mental health crises would also help with aftercare decision-making. Learning identified from the participants' experiences lends support to collaboration between emergency and mental health services, an important step towards improving the section 136 process so that detainees can access help without unnecessary delay

Questionnaire surveys to discover academic staff and library staff perceptions of a National Union catalogue

During the feasibility study into a National Union catalogue for the UK (UKNUC), a questionnaire survey was undertaken of the needs of both academic staff in higher education and library staff. A response rate of 40-50 per cent was achieved, 846 questionnaires being returned for academics and 724 for librarians. The analysis suggests that a UKNUC would be highly valued and heavily used by all categories. Academics felt it would have a positive effect on their information searching, and wished to include the holdings of the British Library, and libraries of both the major research universities and the ``traditional’’ universities. They wanted it to be comprehensive and easy to use, to include locations of both books and journals, and to facilitate subject collection searching. Library staff have similar priorities to academics, although there are more variations by sector and a recognition of a UKNUC’s value as a potential source of bibliographic records

Anomalous Properties of Quadrupole Collective States in 136^{136}Te and beyond

The ground and low-lying states of neutron-rich exotic Te and Sn isotopes are studied in terms of the nuclear shell model by the same Hamiltonian used for the spherical-deformed shape phase transition of Ba isotopes, without any adjustment. An anomalously small value is obtained for B(E2;01+21+)B(E2;0^+_1\to 2^+_1) in 136^{136}Te, consistently with a recent experiment. The levels of 136^{136}Te up to yrast 12+12^+ are shown to be in agreement with observed ones. It is pointed out that 136^{136}Te can be an exceptionally suitable case for studying mixed-symmetry 1+^+, 2+^+ and 3+^+ states, and predictions are made for energies, M1 and E2 properties. Systematic trends of structure of heavier and more exotic Sn and Te isotopes beyond 136^{136}Te are studied by Monte Carlo Shell Model, presenting an unusual and very slow evolution of collectivity/deformation.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.
