A description of the ratio between electric and magnetic proton form factors by using space-like, time-like data and dispersion relations
We use the available information on the ratio between the electric and
magnetic proton form factors coming from recently published space-like data and
from the few available time-like data. We apply a dispersive procedure on these
data to evaluate the behaviour of this ratio, as a complex function, for all

Overexpression of beta-carotene hydroxylase enhances stress tolerance in Arabidopsis
Plant stress caused by extreme environmental conditions is already a principal reason for yield reduction in crops. The threat of global environment change makes it increasingly important to generate crop plants that will withstand such conditions. Stress, particularly stress caused by increased sunlight, leads to the production of reactive oxygen species that cause photo-oxidative cell damage. Carotenoids, which are present in the membranes of all photosynthetic organisms, help protect against such light-dependent oxidative damage. In plants, the xanthophyll cycle (the reversible interconversion of two carotenoids, violaxanthin and zeaxanthin) has a key photoprotective role and is therefore a promising target for genetic engineering to enhance stress tolerance. Here we show that in Arabidopsis thaliana overexpression of the chyB gene that encodes -carotene hydroxylase—an enzyme in the zeaxanthin biosynthetic pathway—causes a specific twofold increase in the size of the xanthophyll cycle pool. The plants are more tolerant to conditions of high light and high temperature, as shown by reduced leaf necrosis, reduced production of the stress indicator anthocyanin and reduced lipid peroxidation. Stress protection is probably due to the function of zeaxanthin in preventing oxidative damage of membranes
A system for monitoring NO2 emissions from biomass burning by using GOME and ATSR-2 data
In this paper, we propose a system for monitoring abnormal NO2 emissions in troposphere by using remote-sensing sensors. In particular, the system aims at estimating the amount of NO2 resulting from biomass burning by exploiting the synergies between the GOME and the ATSR-2 sensors mounted on board of the ERS-2 satellite. Two different approaches to the estimation of NO2 are proposed: the former, which is the simplest one, assumes a linear relationship between the GOME and ATSR-2 measurements and the NO2 concentration. The latter exploits a nonlinear and nonparametric method based on a radial basis function (RBF) neural network. The architecture of such a network is defined in order to retrieve the values of NO2 concentration on the basis of the GOME and ATSR-2 measurements, as well as of other ancillary input parameters. Experimental results, obtained on a real data set, confirm the effectiveness of the proposed system, which represents a promising tool for operational applications

The response of tropospheric circulation to perturbations in lower-stratospheric temperature
A multiple regression analysis of the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis dataset shows a response to increased solar activity of a weakening and poleward shift of the subtropical jets. This signal is separable from other influences, such as those of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and is very similar to that seen in previous studies using global circulation models (GCMs) of the effects of an increase in solar spectral irradiance. The response to increased stratospheric (volcanic) aerosol is found in the data to be a weakening and equatorward shift of the jets. The GCM studies of the solar influence also showed an impact on tropospheric mean meridional circulation with a weakening and expansion of the tropical Hadley cells and a poleward shift of the Ferrel cells. To understand the mechanisms whereby the changes in solar irradiance affect tropospheric winds and circulation, experiments have been carried out with a simplified global circulation model. The results show that generic heating of the lower stratosphere tends to weaken the subtropical jets and the tropospheric mean meridional circulations. The positions of the jets, and the extent of the Hadley cells, respond to the distribution of the stratospheric heating, with low-latitude heating forcing them to move poleward, and high-latitude or latitudinally uniform heating forcing them equatorward. The patterns of response are similar to those that are found to be a result of the solar or volcanic influences, respectively, in the data analysis. This demonstrates that perturbations to the heat balance of the lower stratosphere, such as those brought about by solar or volcanic activity, can produce changes in the mean tropospheric circulation, even without any direct forcing below the tropopause
Theoretical study of -U/W(110) thin films from density functional theory calculations: Structural, magnetic and electronic properties
Structural, electronic and magnetic properties were calculated for the
optimized -U/W(110) thin films (TFs) within the density functional
theory. Our optimization for 1U/7W(110) shows that the U-W vertical interlayer
spacing (ILS) is expanded by 14.0% compared to our calculated bulk W-W ILS.
Spin and orbital magnetic moments (MMs) per U atom were found to be enhanced
from zero for the bulk of -U to 1.4 and -0.4 at the
interface of the 1U/7W(110), respectively. Inversely, our result for 3U/7W(110)
TFs shows that the surface U-U ILS is contracted by 15.7% compared to our
obtained bulk U-U spacing. The enhanced spin and orbital MMs in the 1U/7W(110)
were then found to be suppressed in 3U/7W(110) to their ignorable bulk values.
The calculated density of states (DOS) corroborates the enhancement and
suppression of the MMs and shows that the total DOS, in agreement with
experiment, is dominated in the vicinity of Fermi level by the 5f U states.
Proximity and mismatch effects of the nonmagnetic W(110) substrate were

Au/TiO2(110) interfacial reconstruction stability from ab initio
We determine the stability and properties of interfaces of low-index Au
surfaces adhered to TiO2(110), using density functional theory energy density
calculations. We consider Au(100) and Au(111) epitaxies on rutile TiO2(110)
surface, as observed in experiments. For each epitaxy, we consider several
different interfaces: Au(111)//TiO2(110) and Au(100)//TiO2(110), with and
without bridging oxygen, Au(111) on 1x2 added-row TiO2(110) reconstruction, and
Au(111) on a proposed 1x2 TiO reconstruction. The density functional theory
energy density method computes the energy changes on each of the atoms while
forming the interface, and evaluates the work of adhesion to determine the
equilibrium interfacial structure.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure
‘I don’t know what I’m doing. How about you?’: Discourse and identity in practitioners dealing with the survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
This research is based on interviews conducted with a voluntary group of health practitioners who care for the adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse in one area of Scotland. This project takes a broadly interpretive approach to the interviews, and examines the processes of sense-making apparent in the scripts of the doctors, community nurse and counsellors who comprise this voluntary Forum. Those interviewed were highly sceptical of traditional medical approaches to dealing with survivors of such abuse, and they all questioned the effectiveness of expert professional knowledge. The research highlights the role of patient disclosure as a key mechanism in the process of their treatment, which is akin to the confessional technology discussed in detail in the work of Michel Foucault. Combined with other medical technologies patient disclosure is revealed as a technique of normalization. In this particular case the experts themselves were engaged in unravelling this process in search of alternative approaches to caring for their patients, which were based on a relationship of equal partnership rather than of expert authority. This research thus begins to illustrate the processes of sense-making and identity formation which exist between professional health care workers and the victims of abuse for whom they care
