Total and Partial Sleep Deprivation in Clomipramine-Treated Endogenous Depressives

Improvement in depression after total sleep deprivation (TSD) is, as a rule, followed by relapse after subsequent ad libitum sleep. This study is addressed to the question of how nocturnal partial sleep following TSD affects this relapse. Thirty endogenously depressed patients participated in the study. During the night after TSD, subjects were allowed sleep during one of three periods, i.e., unlimited sleep (11:00 p.m.-8:00 a.m.), early partial sleep (11:00 p.m.-3:00 a.m.), or late partial sleep (4:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m.). The hypothesis that partial sleep deprivation on the night following TSD prevents relapse has to be rejected. Relapse was inversely related to a drop in minimum rectal temperature during the night with unlimited or partial sleep, compared with minimum rectal temperature on the previous night.

Type-III and IV interacting Weyl points

3+1-dimensional Weyl fermions in interacting systems are described by effective quasi-relativistic Green's functions parametrized by a 16 element matrix $e^\mu_\alpha$ in an expansion around the Weyl point. The matrix $e^{\mu}_{\alpha}$ can be naturally identified as an effective tetrad field for the fermions. The correspondence between the tetrad field and an effective quasi-relativistic metric $g_{\mu\nu}$ governing the Weyl fermions allows for the possibility to simulate different classes of metric fields emerging in general relativity in interacting Weyl semimetals. According to this correspondence, there can be four types of Weyl fermions, depending on the signs of the components $g^{00}$ and $g_{00}$ of the effective metric. In addition to the conventional type-I fermions with a tilted Weyl cone and type-II fermions with an overtilted Weyl cone for $g^{00}>0$ and respectively $g_{00}>0$ or $g_{00}<0$, we find additional "type-III" and "type-IV" Weyl fermions with instabilities (complex frequencies) for $g^{00}0$ or $g_{00}<0$, respectively. While the type-I and type-II Weyl points allow us to simulate the black hole event horizon at an interface where $g^{00}$ changes sign, the type-III Weyl point leads to effective spacetimes with closed timelike curves.Comment: 7 pages; journal versio

On the Security of Y-00 under Fast Correlation and Other Attacks on the Key

The potential weakness of the Y-00 direct encryption protocol when the encryption box ENC in Y-00 is not chosen properly is demonstrated in a fast correlation attack by S. Donnet et al in Phys. Lett. A 35, 6 (2006) 406-410. In this paper, we show how this weakness can be eliminated with a proper design of ENC. In particular, we present a Y-00 configuration that is more secure than AES under known-plaintext attack. It is also shown that under any ciphertext-only attack, full information-theoretic security on the Y-00 seed key is obtained for any ENC when proper deliberate signal randomization is employed

On the Prospects for Laser Cooling of TlF

We measure the upper state lifetime and two ratios of vibrational branching fractions f_{v'v} on the B^{3}\Pi_{1}(v') - X^{1}\Sigma^{+}(v) transition of TlF. We find the B state lifetime to be 99(9) ns. We also determine that the off-diagonal vibrational decays are highly suppressed: f_{01}/f_{00} < 2x10^{-4} and f_{02}/f_{00} = 1.10(6)%, in excellent agreement with their predicted values of f_{01}/f_{00} < 8x10^{-4} and f_{02}/f_{00} = 1.0(2)% based on Franck-Condon factors calculated using Morse and RKR potentials. The implications of these results for the possible laser cooling of TlF and fundamental symmetries experiments are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure

Spin alignment of K∗(892)±K^*(892)^\pm mesons produced in neutron-carbon interactions

A new precise measurements of spin density matrix element $\rho_{00}$ of $K^*(892)^{\pm}$ mesons produced inclusively in neutron-carbon interactions at \~60 GeV have been carried out in the EXCHARM experiment at the Serpukhov accelerator. The values of $\rho_{00}$ obtained in the transversity frame are $0.424\pm0.011(stat)\pm0.018(sys)$ for $K^*(892)^+$ and $0.393\pm0.025(stat)\pm0.018(sys)$ for $K^*(892)^-$. The Discovery of a Second Field Methane Brown Dwarf from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Commissioning Data

We report the discovery of a second field methane brown dwarf from the commissioning data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The object, SDSS J134646.45-003150.4 (SDSS 1346-00), was selected because of its very red color and stellar appearance. Its spectrum between 0.8-2.5 mic is dominated by strong absorption bands of H_2O and CH_4 and closely mimics those of Gliese 229B and SDSS 162414.37+002915.6 (SDSS 1624+00), two other known methane brown dwarfs. SDSS 1346-00 is approximately 1.5 mag fainter than Gliese 229B, suggesting that it lies about 11 pc from the sun. The ratio of flux at 2.1 mic to that at 1.27 mic is larger for SDSS 1346-00 than for Gliese 229B and SDSS 1624+00, which suggests that SDSS 1346-00 has a slightly higher effective temperature than the others. Based on a search area of 130 sq. deg. and a detection limit of z* = 19.8, we estimate a space density of 0.05 pc^-3 for methane brown dwarfs with T_eff ~ 1000 K in the 40 pc^3 volume of our search.
