    Human resourcing in academic libraries : the 'lady librarian', the call for flexible staff and the need to be counted

    This paper reports on a recent set of research findings into human resource (HR) deployment in academic, college and national libraries in the UK and Ireland by selectively summarising these findings. The recommendations are that libraries should make available for comparison by others not only their library service provision, i.e. opening hours, but also staff provision, i.e. staffing numbers and demographics and staff deployment, with a view to benchmarking levels of flexibility. This work highlights the lack of existing benchmarking facilities in UK universities and colleges of higher education, relating to HR deployment in libraries, and recommends that Sconul extends the existing data collection in its Annual Statistical return to include this HR area

    High-sensitivity ultrasound-modulated optical tomography with a photorefractive polymer

    By detecting ultrasonically tagged diffuse light, ultrasound-modulated optical tomography images optical contrast with ultrasonic resolution deep in turbid media, such as biological tissue. However, small detection etendues and weak tagged light submerged in strong untagged background light limit the signal detection sensitivity. In this Letter, we report the use of a large-area (∼5 cm×5 cm ) photorefractive polymer film that yields more than 10 times detection etendue over previous detection schemes. Our polymer-based system enabled us to resolve absorbing objects embedded inside diffused media thicker than 80 transport mean free paths, by using moderate light power and short ultrasound pulses

    A Preliminary Investigation towards the Risk Stratification of Allogeneic Stem Cell Recipients with Respect to the Potential for Development of GVHD via Their Pre-Transplant Plasma Lipid and Metabolic Signature

    The clinical outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT) may be influenced by the metabolic status of the recipient following conditioning, which in turn may enable risk stratification with respect to the development of transplant-associated complications such as graft vs. host disease (GVHD). To better understand the impact of the metabolic profile of transplant recipients on post-transplant alloreactivity, we investigated the metabolic signature of 14 patients undergoing myeloablative conditioning followed by either human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-matched related or unrelated donor SCT, or autologous SCT. Blood samples were taken following conditioning and prior to transplant on day 0 and the plasma was comprehensively characterized with respect to its lipidome and metabolome via liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LCMS) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GCMS). A pro-inflammatory metabolic profile was observed in patients who eventually developed GVHD. Five potential pre-transplant biomarkers, 2-aminobutyric acid, 1-monopalmitin, diacylglycerols (DG 38:5, DG 38:6), and fatty acid FA 20:1 demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity towards predicting post-transplant GVHD. The resulting predictive model demonstrated an estimated predictive accuracy of risk stratification of 100%, with area under the curve of the ROC of 0.995. The likelihood ratio of 1-monopalmitin (infinity), DG 38:5 (6.0), and DG 38:6 (6.0) also demonstrated that a patient with a positive test result for these biomarkers following conditioning and prior to transplant will be at risk of developing GVHD. Collectively, the data suggest the possibility that pre-transplant metabolic signature may be used for risk stratification of SCT recipients with respect to development of alloreactivity

    The one-loop elastic coefficients for the Helfrich membrane in higher dimensions

    Using a covariant geometric approach we obtain the effective bending couplings for a 2-dimensional rigid membrane embedded into a (2+D)(2+D)-dimensional Euclidean space. The Hamiltonian for the membrane has three terms: The first one is quadratic in its mean extrinsic curvature. The second one is proportional to its Gaussian curvature, and the last one is proportional to its area. The results we obtain are in agreement with those finding that thermal fluctuations soften the 2-dimensional membrane embedded into a 3-dimensional Euclidean space.Comment: 9 page

    Equivalence of volume and temperature fluctuations in power-law ensembles

    Relativistic particle production often requires the use of Tsallis statistics to account for the apparently power-like behavior of transverse momenta observed in the data even at a few GeV/c. In such an approach this behavior is attributed to some specific intrinsic fluctuations of the temperature TT in the hadronizing system and is fully accounted by the nonextensivity parameter qq. On the other hand, it was recently shown that similar power-law spectra can also be obtained by introducing some specific volume fluctuations, apparently without invoking the introduction of Tsallis statistics. We demonstrate that, in fact, when the total energy is kept constant, these volume fluctuations are equivalent to temperature fluctuations and can be derived from them. In addition, we show that fluctuations leading to multiparticle power-law Tsallis distributions introduce specific correlations between the considered particles. We then propose a possible way to distinguish the fluctuations in each event from those occurring from event-to-event. This could have applications in the analysis of high density events at LHC (and especially in ALICE).Comment: Revised version with new figure, footnotes and references adde
