Seven Ways Foreclosures Impact Communities
The negative impacts of foreclosure on communities are far reaching. Although little formal data exists on this subject, local news accounts and reports from local officials paint a multifaceted picture. Not only are people losing homes, but also communities are suffering economically, physically and socially. This report mainly focuses on areas that are hardest hit: metropolitan areas and their suburbs. We have identified the following seven impact areas for foreclosure
The cylindrical bark beetles of Malta (Insecta: Coleoptera: Zopheridae, Colydiinae)
Four species of Colydiinae (Zopheridae) are recorded from Malta of which Langelandia niticosta sp.n. is described as new. Bitoma rufula MOTSCHULSKY, 1863 is transferred to Microprius FAIRMAIRE, 1868. Microprius linearis (WOLLASTON, 1867), Synchitodes rufa REITTER, 1877 and Synchitodes frivaldszkyi REITTER, 1881 are synonymized with Microprius rufulus (MOTSCHULSKY, 1863). Microprius rufulus is recorded from Europe (Germany and Malta) for the first time.peer-reviewe
Electron irradiance of conductive sidewalls: A determining factor for pattern-dependent charging
Numerical simulations of charging and profile evolution during gate electrode overetching in high density plasmas have been performed to investigate the effect of long conductive sidewalls on profile distortion (notching). The results reveal that the angle of electron irradiance of the conductive portion of the sidewalls affects profoundly the charging potential of the gates. Larger angles, obtained for thinner masks and/or thicker polysilicon, result in reduced gate potentials which, through their influence on the local ion dynamics, cause more severe notching at all lines of the microstructure
Espècie nova del gènere Moitessieria (Gastropoda: Moitessieriidae) per a Catalunya, Espanya
A new species of the genus Moitessieria Bourguignat, 1863 from Catalonia (Spain) is described, found in sediments from a spring in Sant Joan les Fonts (Girona). The new species is compared with other congeneric species from which it conchologically differs.
Turning Points in the U.S. Civil War: A British Perspective
This paper examines the Confederate cotton bonds floated in Europe in March 1863 and traded on the London market. Over our March 27, 1863 to June 17, 1865 sample we isolate two, non-reversed, "turning points" that follow news of Confederate defeat at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in July 1863 and the fall of Atlanta in September 1864. Our analysis suggests that the turning points important to Southern interests differ from those identified for the Northern side by Willard, Guinnane and Rosen (1996). It seems that war news did not always have symmetric effects on North and South.
