Detection of aerolysin and hemolysin genes in Aeromonas spp. isolated from environmental and shellfish sources by polymerase chain reaction
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was used to assay for the detection of specific genes in the genomes of the Aeromonas spp. isolated from environmental and shellfish sources, particularly aero and hlyA genes, responsible for aerolysin and hemolysin toxins production in this genus. The results showed that: (i) the 1500 bp amplicon of the hlyA gene was detected in 20/38 of the Aeromonas hydrophila, 13/38 of the A. caviae and 6/9 of the A. veronii biovar sobria isolates; (ii) the 690 bp amplicon of the aero gene was detected in 20/38 of A. hydrophila, 17/38
of A. caviae and 6/9 of A. veronii biovar sobria isolates; (iii) the nucleotide blast results of aerolysin
gene sequences of the representative strains of A. hydrophila, A. caviae and A. veronii biovar sobria
revealed a high homology of 94%, 95% and 95% with published sequences, respectively and; (iv) the protein blast showed 97%, 94% and 96% homology when compared to the published
sequences, respectively. The finding of A. hydrophila virulence genes in other members of the genus Aeromonas, may give a new perspective to the significance of these results. The method described here may be a useful detection tool to assist in further investigation of aero and hlyA genes in the genus Aeromonas, especially for food microbiologist

A Survey for Potential Biocontrol Agents of Bactrocera cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) in Thailand
Scientific note.Limited investigations on parasitoids of the melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett), infesting five species of Cucurbitaceae and seven species of Solanaceae were conducted in Thailand to determine natural occurrence of biological control agents. Fruit samples were collected during January-February 1996, and tephritid puparia were imported into the State of Hawaii Quarantine Facility for fly and parasitoid emergence. Cucumis sativus L., Luffa acutangula (L.), and Momordica charantia L. were commonly infested by B. cucurbitae. Bactrocera tau (Walker) was dominant only in L. acutangula. Infestation of ripe, cultivated fruit of M. charantia was 72.3 B. cucurbitae/kg fruit and parasitoids were pre-dominantly Psyttalia fletcheri (Silvestri) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), with parasitization rates up to 12.4%. Bactrocera cucurbitae infesting M. charantia in northern Thailand yielded an unidentified Aceratoneuromyia species, (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Unlike other eulophids that attack B. cucurbitae, which require the presence of P. fletcheri in the same puparium to suppress host immunity, this parasitoid was able to develop alone. Average fecundity was 135 offspring/ female and mean parasitoids /host puparium was 21.1. It was also developed in the laboratory on the Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), with an average life span of 23 d in both host species. Six species of solanaceous fruit were mainly infested by Bactrocera latifrons (Hendel), with infestation rates ranging from 4 to 17 flies/kg fruit. Psyttalia fletcheri and unidentified opiine, Bitomus species, eclosed from B. latifrons infested bird chili, Capsicum frustescens L. Only Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. produced B. cucurbitae, lightly parasitized by P. fletcheri
Gravitational Interactions and Fine-Structure Constant
Electromagnetic and gravitational central-field problems are studied with
relativistic quantum mechanics on curved space-time backgrounds. Corrections to
the transition current are identified. Analogies of the gravitational and
electromagnetic spectra suggest the definition of a gravitational
fine-structure constant. The electromagnetic and gravitational coupling
constants enter the Einstein-Hilbert-Maxwell Lagrangian. We postulate that the
variational principle holds with regard to a global dilation transformation of
the space-time coordinates. The variation suggests is consistent with a
functional relationship of the form alpha_QED being proportional to
alpha_G^(1/2), where alpha_QED is the electrodynamic fine-structure constant,
and alpha_G its gravitational analogue.Comment: 9 pages; LaTeX; Appeared in the Proceedings to the 17th Bled workshop

Comparative study on structural, electrical transport and magnetic properties of cr-doped in charge-ordered Pr0.75Na0.25Mn1-Xcrxo3 and Nd0.75Na0.25Mn1-Ycryo3 manganites
Cr doping in charge-ordered Pr0.75Na0.25Mn1-xCrxO3 and Nd0.75Na0.25Mn1-yCryO3 have been synthesized using conventional solid-state method to investigate its effect on structural, electrical transport and magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis for both compounds showed that the samples were crystallized in an orthorhombic structure with Pnma group. The unit cell volume value decrease as the Cr-doped increased indicating the possibility of Mn3+ ion was replaced by Cr3+ due to the different of ionic radius. The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity showed an insulating behavior down to the lower temperature the both parent compound (x = 0 and y = 0). Successive substitution of Cr at Mn-site in Pr0.75Na0.25Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites induced the metal-insulator (MI) transition temperature around TMI~120 K and TMI~122 K for x = 0.02 and x = 0.04 samples respectively suggestively due to the enhancement of double-exchange (DE) mechanism as a result of suppress the CO state. Analysis of resistivity data of dlnρ/dT-1 vs. T in Nd0.75Na0.25Mn1-yCryO3 manganite, showed a peak around 210 K and 160 K for y = 0 and 0.02 samples respectively while no peak was observed for y = 0.05 sample indicate the charge-ordered (CO) weakened. AC susceptibility, χ ’ measurements in Pr0.75Na0.25Mn1-xCrxO3 exhibits paramagnetic to ferromagnetic-like with curie temperature, TC increases from 132 K for x = 0.02 to 141 K for x = 0.04 with Cr content indicate the suppression of CO state meanwhile in Nd0.75Na0.25Mn1-yCryO3 showed paramagnetic to anti-ferromagnetic transition as Neel temperature TN increases from 115 K for y = 0.02 to 125 K for y = 0.05

Nitrogen Leaching in Intensive Cropping Systems in Tam Duong District, Red River Delta of Vietnam
The environmental and economic consequences of nitrogen (N) lost in rice-based systems in Vietnam is important but has not been extensively studied. The objective of this study was to quantify the amount of N lost in major cropping systems in the Red River Delta. An experiment was conducted in the Red River Delta of Vietnam, on five different crops including rose, daisy, cabbage, chili, and a rice–rice–maize rotation during 2004 and 2005. Core soil samples were taken periodically in 20-cm increments to a depth of 1 m and analyzed for nitrate–nitrogen and ammonium–nitrogen. The results indicate appreciable leaching losses on N in high-rainfall and irrigation conditions, especially when fertilizer application was not well synchronized with crop N demand. Highest annual leaching losses of N were recorded in flowers with 185–190 mm of percolation and 173–193 kg N ha-1, followed by vegetable (cabbage and chili) with 120–122 mm of percolation and 112–115 kg N ha-1, while it was lowest in rice with about 50 kg N ha-1. We developed a simple N transport model that combined water and N movement through the soil profile. In most cases, the model accurately predicted the seasonal dynamics of N as well as N flow between soil layers and the amounts of N lost from the soil profile. The simulated results of N leaching with soil “puddling” conditions illustrate the advantage of an impermeable or hardpan layer in increasing water and nutrient use efficiencies in these soils. These model results also showed that it is possible to accurately estimate N losses with only a few parameters and helped us identify the risks of N leaching
Frequency of Predisposing Factor of Nausea and Vomiting After Chest Surgery Under General Anaesthesia
Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting are common and distressing postsurgical symptoms. These symptoms are of particular concern in outpatient surgery because they may require additional direct resources, such as supplies and antiemetic drugs, and may delay discharge. The objective of this study was to measure the frequency of factors which can cause nausea and vomiting under general anaesthesia after chest surgery.
Methodology: This descriptive case series evaluated frequency of predisposing factor of nausea and vomiting in patients of anaesthesia department of Gulab Devi Hospital Lahore. Questionnaire is made and patients were asked about their age, fever, previous surgery, NPO status, smoking history and hospital stay. This study included 140 patients with post-operative nausea and vomiting.
Results: In this study, 140 patients were taken in which 65 (46.43%) were female and 75 (53.57%) were male. In 140 patient 134 (95.7%) were NPO and 6 (4.3%) were not NPO, 25 (17.9%) were obese and 115 (82.1%) were not obese, 88 (62.9%) patients were suffering fever and 52 (37.1%) were not suffering fever, 80 (57.1%) were infected and 59 (42.1%) were not infected, 53 (37.9%) patients had previous surgery and 87 (62.1%) had no previous surgery, 94 (67.1%) patients had received nitrous oxide and 46 (32.9%) didn\u27t, 97 (69.3%) received volatile gases and 43 (30.7%) not received, 29 (20.7%) received ketamine and 111 (79.3%) not received, 87 (62.1%) received suxamethonium and 53 (37.9%) not received, 119 (85.0%) received propofol and 21 (15.0%) not received, 110 (78.6%) received naluphine and 28 (20.0%) not received. Out of 140 patients, there were 122 (87.1%) who were suffering from pain and 18 (12.9%) were not. 91 (65.0%) patients had gastric distention and 49 (35.0%) patients didn\u27t. Opioids were given to 34 (24.3%) patients and not given to 106 (75.7%) patient.
Conclusion: It is concluded that the nausea and vomiting after surgey under genral anesthesia is due to patient related factors in which most frequent is NPO. Drug related factors include propofol and nalbupin administration. Post operative factors include pain. In whole study of 140 patients, the most frequent is patient related factor (NPO) other than drug related factors and post-operative factors
