The metaphysics of self in Praśastapāda's differential naturalism
In A Compendium of the Characteristics of Categories (Padārthadharmasaṃgraha) the classical Vaiśeṣika philosopher Praśastapāda (6th c. CE) presents an innovative metaphysics of the self. This article examines the defining metaphysical and axiological features of this conception of self and the dualist categorial schema in which it is located. It shows how this idea of the self, as a reflexive and ethical being, grounds a multinaturalist view of natural order and offers a conception of agency that claims to account for all the reflexive features of human mental and bodily life. Finally, it discusses the ends of self’s reflexivity and of human life as a return to the true self. It argues that at the heart of Praśastapāda’s metaphysics of self is the idea that ethics is metaphysics, and that epistemic practice is ethical practice

Multiplying Integers: on the diverse practices of medieval Sanskrit authors
International audienceWe examine the diverse ways Brahmagupta (628 CE), Mahāvīra (ca. 850), Śrīdhara (ca. 750-900) and their commentators understood how a multiplication could be executed. We describe a variety of algorithms. We note how commentators give us clues to how numbers are shaped for execution, how the procedure is displayed on a working surface, etc. We attempt to evaluate in which ways resources of the decimal place value notation were used. The current historiography of elementary operations in Sanskrit sources is also revised along the way

The Devotional Metaphysics of Śaṅkaradeva (1449–1568): The Advaitic Brahman as the Beloved Friend
Various forms of Advaita Vedānta as well as devotional Vedānta developed during the medieval centuries diverse hermeneutic strategies of positioning and repositioning jñāna and bhakti in their own conceptual-soteriological systems. These Vedāntic systems do not place jñāna and bhakti in hermetically sealed compartments but interweave them from within their distinctive metaphysical structures. Our discussion of the Assamese poet-saint Śaṅkaradeva (1449–1568) will highlight these broader themes in the reception histories of the Vedāntic materials. Śaṅkaradeva developed a distinctive pattern of devotional metaphysics rooted primarily in the Bhāgavata-purāṇa, where the ultimate reality, which is indicated with highly characteristic Advaitic analogies, is also repeatedly described as the beloved friend who lovingly protects the devotees and who even becomes subservient to them
Descriptions of Excavations (khāta) in the Triśatībhāṣya : Surveying Method and Two Terms, laṃba and kaḍī (Study of the History of Mathematics 2022)
The Triśatībhāṣya is an anonymous commentary on the Sanskrit arithmetic text Triśatī by Śrīdhara (ca. 800 CE). “Excavations” (khāta) is one of the topics in the Triśatī, and Śrīdhara offers rules and examples for calculating the dimensions of a pit with irregular sides (i.e., arithmetical means) and the capacity of a pit with uniform sides. The present paper attempts to restore the surveying method of excavations described in the Triśatībhāṣya, and to clarify the meanings of two terms, laṃba and kaḍī, employed in the commentary
The Asymmetry of ‘Creation’ and ‘Origination’: Contrasts within Comparative Theology
THE following essay is a contribution to comparative theology, particularly in its contrastive dimension. For a successful comparative theology, the two theologies or religious perspectives being compared and contrasted must be described accurately and equally in depth. Where Christian theology in its Catholic dimension is one pole of the comparison, it is important to make a distinction between doctrine and theology which I will do below. Issues of translation also immediately arise
