Higher Education: Obligation or Opportunity?
From the beginning of my experience at Marquette, I continually observed students that appeared to demonstrate no enthusiasm for getting an education, reflected in a noticeable lack of participation in class discussions. I felt my expectations of academia being crushed as students boasted about skipping lectures and passively sat in class, seemingly disinterested in the professor and the material. If college was truly regarded as an opportunity for intellectual growth, why did students treat education as nothing more than an obligation? Understanding higher education in further education colleges
This summary presents the main findings from research undertaken for the Department for
Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to understand the current nature of higher education
(HE) in further education colleges (FECs) in England. The study was carried out between
March 2011 and March 2012 by a team from the University of Sheffield and the Institute of
Education, University of London.
The research involved a range of qualitative and quantitative approaches, including: a
review of the relevant literature; an analysis of administrative data on provision and
participation; fieldwork in case-study FECs; interviews with managers in colleges and their
partner higher education institutions (HEIs); a questionnaire survey of students coupled
with in-class discussion groups; and interviews with employers.
An overview of the design and conduct of the study is given in Chapter 1, including its
aims, sources, methods and timetable. Methods of data collection and analysis are also
described in relevant chapters and appendices
TANF and Higher Education
Welfare reforms in 1996 created the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Block Grant program (TANF). Under the assumption that a job will provide recipients with a path to self-sufficiency, this program focuses primarily on putting them to work. Unfortunately, this work-first focus has not resulted in a path out of poverty for the majority of recipients. New York State must reform its TANF program to provide relevant education and training for its recipients, equipping them with the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty and maintain a self-sufficient life

Creating Open Source Geodemographic Classifications for Higher Education Applications
This paper explores the use of geodemographic classifications to investigate the social, economic and spatial dimensions of participation in higher education. Education is a public service that confers very significant and tangible benefits upon receiving individuals: as such, we argue that understanding the geodemography of educational opportunity requires an application-specific classification, that exploits under-used educational data sources. We develop a classification for the UK higher education sector, and apply it to the Gospel Oak area of London. We discuss the wider merits of sector specific applications of geodemographics, with particular reference to issues of public service provision
