The Sophists between aletheia and eikos: The Case of Gorgias

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the notion of truth in the sophists, with particular focus on Gorgias. While the Treatise on Non-Being appears to posit an unbridgeable gap between speech and truth, the Defense of Palamedes, by confining truth to subjective experience, denies the possibility of communicating it to others through discourse. The Encomium of Helen, by contrast, begins by presenting truth as a quality that perfects speech. Yet at the heart of the argument, it is speech’s power to persuade beyond truth that comes to the fore. What, then, constitutes the truth of speech for Gorgias? The particular importance he gives to the notion of eikos suggests that truth should not be sought in an impossible correspondence between language and reality, but rather within discourse itself, in the rigor of its argumentative structure.Il presente contributo si propone di indagare la nozione di verità nei sofisti, con particolare attenzione a Gorgia. Se il Trattato sul non essere sembra porre uno iato incolmabile tra discorso e verità, la Difesa di Palamede, circoscrivendo il vero all’esperienza soggettiva, ne preclude ogni possibile comunicazione ad altri attraverso il linguaggio. L’Encomio di Elena si apre invece indicando nella verità una qualità che conferisce perfezione al discorso. Ma nel cuore dell’argomentazione emerge la capacità del discorso di persuadere anche al di là del vero. In che cosa consiste, allora, la verità del discorso per Gorgia? L’importanza che il sofista attribuisce alla nozione di eikos suggerisce che la verità non debba essere ricercata in un impossibile rapporto tra linguaggio e realtà, bensì all’interno del discorso stesso, nel rigore della sua struttura argomentativa
