Phraseological studies in perspective: theory, usage, and interfaces

Abstract

O artigo apresenta uma reflexão panorâmica sobre a Fraseologia, disciplina dedicada ao estudo das unidades fraseológicas, isto é, combinações estáveis de palavras que funcionam como um todo semântico e discursivo. Partindo da compreensão de que essas unidades desempenham papel central no funcionamento da língua e na construção de sentidos, o trabalho destaca sua relevância para a descrição linguística, o ensino de línguas, a tradução e a análise do uso real da língua. Propõe, assim, uma abordagem ampla da Fraseologia, articulando três eixos principais: a delimitação de seu objeto de estudo, o percurso histórico da área no Brasil e a discussão de seu caráter inter e multidisciplinar. Outrossim, mostra como os estudos fraseológicos evoluíram de levantamentos descritivos e de cunho folclórico para investigações sistemáticas, ancoradas em quadros teóricos consolidados e em metodologias contemporâneas, como a análise de corpora. Ao tratar do desenvolvimento da Fraseologia no contexto brasileiro, ressalta-se o processo de institucionalização da área, marcado pela ampliação da produção acadêmica, pela criação de grupos de pesquisa e pela consolidação de espaços de debate científico. Esse percurso reflete a maturidade dos estudos linguísticos no país e a consolidação da Fraseologia como ciência com seus próprios fundamentos teóricos e métodos de investigação. Por fim, o texto enfatiza a natureza inter e multidisciplinar da Fraseologia, destacando seus diálogos com diferentes campos do conhecimento e suas dimensões teórica, prática e aplicada. Essa perspectiva evidencia o potencial da Fraseologia como eixo integrador nas ciências da linguagem e como área estratégica para a compreensão dos usos linguísticos em contextos sociais, culturais e comunicativos diversos.The article presents a panoramic reflection on Phraseology, a discipline dedicated to the study of phrasal units, that is, stable combinations of words that function as a semantic and discursive whole. Starting from the understanding that these units play a central role in the functioning of language and in the construction of meanings, the work highlights their relevance for linguistic description, language teaching, translation, and the analysis of real language use. It thus proposes a broad approach to Phraseology, articulating three main axes: the delimitation of its object of study, the historical trajectory of the field in Brazil, and the discussion of its inter and multidisciplinary character. Furthermore, it shows how phraseological studies have evolved from descriptive and folkloric surveys to systematic investigations, anchored in consolidated theoretical frameworks and contemporary methodologies, such as corpus analysis. When addressing the development of Phraseology in the Brazilian context, the process of institutionalization of the field is emphasized, marked by the expansion of academic production, the creation of research groups, and the consolidation of spaces for scientific debate. This trajectory reflects the maturity of linguistic studies in the country and the consolidation of Phraseology as a science with its own theoretical foundations and research methods. Finally, the text emphasizes the inter and multidisciplinary nature of Phraseology, highlighting its dialogues with different fields of knowledge and its theoretical, practical, and applied dimensions. This perspective highlights the potential of Phraseology as an integrative axis in the language sciences and as a strategic area for understanding linguistic uses in diverse social, cultural, and communicative contexts
