Holistic Medicine in the Management of Behavioral Pathologies in Companion Animals: Review of Alternative Methods and Complementary Therapies

Abstract

Behavioral pathologies in companion animals are a growing challenge in veterinary medicine due to their impact on animal welfare and the quality of life of their caregivers. Psychotropic drugs are the preferred therapeutic option. However, there is a wide variety of complementary medicines that are less well-known but offer an alternative for ethological patients. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of holistic medicines or therapies as therapeutic alternatives or complementary treatments for behavioral problems in dogs and cats. Ancient techniques such as acupuncture were explored, along with emerging concepts such as the gut-brain axis.Médico Veterinari
