Abstract

Tariffs play a significant political role but are only one possible strategy in international trade. This text discusses the use of intellectual property (brands, collective marks, and geographical indications) as a strategy and their effects on tariffs and trade barriers. The paper uses a bibliographical survey of international trade to illustrate these relationships. The results of the discussion show that, among brands, collective marks, and geographical indications, the latter enjoy the greatest protection against tariff policies, especially when it comes to incremental tariffs. Geographical indications have a reputation for origin and certified quality; this is the only signal that can protect consumers against barriers. It can be concluded that one answer to reducing tariff conflicts, for Brazil and other countries as well, is to invest in and protect intellectual property and signs of quality such as GIs and certification marks.As tarifas têm relevante papel político mas são somente uma das estratégias possíveis em comércio internacional. O texto discute o uso de Propriedade Intelectual de Marcas, Marcas Coletivas e Indicações Geográficas (IG), como estratégia e seus efeitos à frente de tarifas e barreiras comerciais. O trabalho utiliza uma pesquisa bibliográfica do comércio internacional para mostrar estas relações. Os resultados da discussão mostram que, entre Marcas, Marcas coletivas e Indicações Geográficas, estas últimas têm a maior proteção a respeito de políticas tarifarias, sobretudo quando trata-se de tarifas incrementais. A Indicação Geográfica tem uma reputação de origem e qualidade certificada, este è unico sinal que pode segurar consumidores à frente de barreiras. Pode-se concluir que uma resposta para reduzir os conflitos de tarifas, para o Brasil mas também em outros países, é de investir em propriedade intelectual e sinais de qualidade como IG e Marcas de certificação e protege-la
