PENGARUH PENDIDIKAN KESEHATAN METODE DEMONSTRASI TERHADAP KETERAMPILAN IBU MENANGANI TERSEDAK PADA ANAK USIA 3-5 TAHUN

Abstract

Choking is a primary emergency in children, often caused by high-risk foods such as grapes and nuts. Many mothers lack adequate first aid skills, potentially leading to preventable morbidity and mortality. Health education using demonstration methods is effective in enhancing skills like the Heimlich maneuver. This study aims to assess the impact of this method on mothers' skills in managing choking in children aged 3-5 years at TK Muslimat Al-Istiqomah Ponorogo. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-post test approach. Twenty-three mothers with children aged 3-5 years participated as respondents. Skill assessments were conducted before and after a 60-minute demonstration-based health education session, using validated and reliable observation checklists. The results showed that prior to the intervention, 61% of mothers had poor skills and no one was categorized as good. After the intervention, 82.6% of mothers demonstrated good skills in managing choking, with none remaining in the poor category. Statistical analysis revealed a significant increase in skills after the health education intervention (p < 0.05). The study concludes that health education using the demonstration method is effective at improving mothers' skills in handling choking emergencies in children. This approach is highly recommended to empower parents and reduce preventable child mortality due to choking.
