Libraries as Third Spaces for Rural Mental Health Support

Abstract

Public libraries are increasingly recognized as vital community “third spaces”—trusted, neutral locations that serve beyond their traditional roles of book lending and digital access. These community hubs are being reimagined as access points for health education and services, especially in rural areas where limited infrastructure is available to support health. This brief highlights emerging models—including “Because You Matter,” Faith Net, and Hoosier Health Check—that demonstrate how libraries can bridge rural health gaps through partnerships, telehealth, and on-site screenings. It also explores the specific interest and potential in Daviess County, Indiana, for implementing similar initiatives
