The cost of magical power: the social and physical repercussions of magic in fantasy literature.

Abstract

Denne bachelor-oppgaven skal se på hvordan litteratur i fantasy-sjangeren bruker magi som et virkemiddel i skrivingen sin. Magi har lenge vært et element i skriving som ikke har noen konsekvenser for brukeren, spesielt i populære litterære verk som Harry Potter og Ringenes Herre som har latt forfattere løse problemene sine ved å bruke en trylleformel eller ett ritual. Denne oppgaven skal undersøke hvordan konsekvenser av magi kan påvirke brukeren av magi sin fysiske, mentale og sosiale status ved hjelp av to littærere verk: Eragon (2005) and The Fifth Season (2015). Konsekvenser på grunn av magi kan bli sett på som et naturlig element på grunn av historisk kontekst i religion og tro i urfolkninger i Australia. På grunn av den økte populæriteten i bøker som Ringenes Herre som har blitt skrevet i en tid hvor ubegrenset bruk av magi har vært et element av håp, så har konsekvenser blitt om til et unaturlig element.This Bachelor thesis will look into how fantasy literature treats magic as a component in writing. Magic has long been a non-consequential element in writing in popular fiction, such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, which has let authors solve all their troubles by using a simple spell or ritual. This does not seem to correlate to historical tendencies in native populations nor in religious rituals. This paper will investigate how consequences of magic can affect the magic user’s physique, mental state and social standing with the help of two literary works of fiction: Eragon (2005) and The Fifth Season (2015). Consequences in result of magic can be seen as a natural element due to historical contexts in religion and native beliefs in Australia. However, due to the popularity in books such as Lord of the Rings which was made in a time when unlimited use of magic became an element of hope, the thought of consequences is seen as unnatural
