Abstract
This thesis explores the history and contemporary practices of visual book design, with a particular focus on cover design. The paper covers the development of the book through the centuries, from functional bindings to design as an important promotional and emotional tool. The most important genres of fiction – romance novels, fantasy, horror and science fiction – are analyzed, with an emphasis on their visual and aesthetic conventions.
The central part of the paper is dedicated to the practical application of the knowledge acquired through the process of redesigning the book “Red Queen” by Victoria Aveyard. The entire process is presented – from gathering inspiration, sketching, design decisions and symbolism, to the final appearance of the cover and the creation of a digital mockup. The aim of the paper was to show how the design of a book not only reflects the content, but also actively shapes the perception and emotion of the reader
