Attitudes and knowledge among educational professionals about epilepsy

Abstract

Epilepsija je jedna od najčešćih neuroloških bolesti u dječjoj dobi te donosi brojne izazove koji mogu značajno utjecati na svakodnevno funkcioniranje djeteta, njegove socijalne odnose, emocionalni i kognitivni razvoj te uključivanje u odgojno-obrazovni sustav. U tom kontekstu, odgojno-obrazovni djelatnici imaju ključnu ulogu u prepoznavanju, razumijevanju i pružanju podrške djeci s epilepsijom, osobito u osiguravanju sigurnog i poticajnog okruženja. Također, odgojno-obrazovni sustav mora omogućiti učinkovitu integraciju djece s epilepsijom, čime se minimiziraju potencijalne prepreke za njihov akademski i socijalni razvoj. Ovo istraživanje usmjereno je na ispitivanje iskustava, stavova, razine znanja i educiranosti odgojno-obrazovnih djelatnika u Republici Hrvatskoj o epilepsiji. Rezultati pokazuju kako većina ispitanika posjeduje zadovoljavajuću razinu znanja o epilepsiji i adekvatnom postupanju u slučaju epileptičnog napadaja, unatoč podatku da većina nikada nije sudjelovala u edukaciji o epilepsiji. Stavovi djelatnika prema djeci s epilepsijom pretežno su pozitivni, osobito u emocionalnom i profesionalnom aspektu rada s oboljelom djecom. Odgojno-obrazovni djelatnici u istraživanju jasno su iskazali interes za dodatna stručna usavršavanja i potrebu za uključivanjem stručnjaka, posebice magistara sestrinstva, u provedbu edukacija unutar odgojno-obrazovnog sustava. Time se potvrđuje važnost kontinuirane edukacije kako bi se odgojno-obrazovni djelatnici bolje pripremili za izazove u radu s djecom s epilepsijom. Dobiveni rezultati mogu poslužiti kao temelj za kreiranje edukativnih programa te poticaj za daljnja istraživanja usmjerena na osnaživanje odgojno-obrazovnih djelatnika u radu s djecom oboljelom od epilepsije. Ovaj rad doprinosi razumijevanju postojećeg stanja i naglašava važnost daljnjeg unaprjeđenja edukacija o epilepsiji u odgojno-obrazovnom sustavu.Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders in childhood and presents numerous challenges that can significantly impact a child's daily functioning, social relationships, emotional and cognitive development, and integration into the educational system. In this context, educators play a key role in recognizing, understanding, and providing support to children with epilepsy, particularly in ensuring a safe and supportive environment. Furthermore, the educational system must enable the effective integration of children with epilepsy, minimizing potential barriers to their academic and social development. This research focuses on examining the experiences, attitudes, knowledge, and level of education of educators in Croatia regarding epilepsy. The results show that most respondents have a satisfactory level of knowledge about epilepsy and appropriate first aid procedures, despite the fact that most have never participated in education on this topic. The attitudes of educators towards children with epilepsy are mostly positive, particularly in the emotional and professional aspects of working with children with epilepsy. The respondents expressed a clear interest in further professional development and the need for the involvement of experts, especially nurses, in implementing education within the educational system. This highlights the importance of continuous education to better prepare educators for the challenges of working with children with epilepsy. The findings provide a foundation for the development of educational programs and serve as a catalyst for further research aimed at strengthening educators in their work with children with epilepsy. This study contributes to understanding the current state and emphasizes the need for further improvement in epilepsy education within the educational system
