Value tensions in machine learning engineering: a study of developers' attitudes.

Abstract

This work explores, through engineering process analysis, how machine learning applications impact society. To analyse the impact of these applications, their engineering is studied as a cultural process, consisting of various conflicts that determine the final impact of these applications on society. The paper presents the decisional tension points experienced by machine learning programmers, the concepts and values that guide their decision-making, and interprets the impact of these decisions on the social impact of machine learning programmes
