Recognition, interpretation and diagenetic evolution of aragonite-cemented seafloor carbonates

Abstract

Hartgründe (engl. "hardgrounds"), sind partiell bis stark lithifizierte Sedimentlagen am Boden eines Gewässers. Diese stratigraphische Horizonte zeichnen während Hiatus-Perioden wichtige geologische Informationen am oder in der Nähe des Meeresbodens auf. Durch die Interpretation der darin enthaltenen geologischen Informationen kann die vollständige stratigraphische Abfolge rekonstruiert werden, die in der stratigraphischen Lücke verloren ging. Diese Arbeit konzentriert sich auf aktuelle Aragonit-zementierte Hartgründe in Abu Dhabi und bietet detaillierte Einblicke in den Lithifikationsprozess im Zusammenhang mit einer ganzen Reihe von umweltgeobiologischen Kontrollen. Die Arbeit bildet ein ganzheitliches Best-Practice-Modell für die Erkennung und Interpretation von Karbonatdiagenese, das pristine Zemente mit zeitlich aufgelöster (transgressiver) Stratigraphie und der räumlichen Verteilung von Meerwassereigenschaften kombiniert.Hardgrounds (layers of the sea or lake floor sediment that underwent early diagenetic lithification) are stratigraphic horizons that record significant geological information at or near the seafloor during hiatal periods. The geological information therein would help reconstruct the complete stratigraphic sequence lost in the hiatus. In light of the scientific significance of the hardground, this research focuses on actualistic aragonite-cemented hardgrounds in Abu Dhabi, offering detailed insight into the lithification process in context with a set of environmental-biological controls. Specifically, this thesis proposes a holistic model that combines non-altered cements with time-resolution (transgressive) stratigraphy and spatial distribution of seawater property. In that sense, this work has provided illuminating insights into carbonate diagenesis and represents a crucial interdisciplinary interface with implications for biogeology and crystallography
