Puccini y el cine: a propósito de las adaptaciones cinematográficas de Tosca

Abstract

Victorien Sardou\u27s Tosca (1887) has stood the test of time not only because of Sarah Bernhardt\u27s unforgettable performance, but also because of Puccini\u27s opera based on the French drama. Puccini\u27s opera, premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome in 1900, reaped wide popularity both in Spain and internationally. This is evidenced by the numerous theatrical and film adaptations that emerged in the early twentieth century. In the first decade of the 20th century alone, in the early days of silent films, four film versions of Tosca were produced. It was in 1941 when the german filmmaker Carl Koch released the first sound version based on Sardou\u27s drama and with music by Puccini. This article aims to analyze the relationship between the cinematographer and the Italian composer\u27s operas in Spain, with special attention to the films inspired by Tosca.La Tosca de Victorien Sardou (1887) ha resistido en el tiempo no solo por la inolvidable interpretación de Sarah Bernhardt, sino también por la ópera de Puccini que toma como base el drama francés. El título pucciniano, estrenado en el Teatro Costanzi de Roma en 1900, cosechó una amplia popularidad tanto en España como internacionalmente. Así lo demuestran las numerosas adaptaciones teatrales y cinematográficas que surgieron a principios del siglo XX. Solamente en la primera década del mencionado siglo, en los inicios del cine mudo, se produjeron cuatro versiones fílmicas de Tosca. Será ya en 1941 cuando el cineasta alemán Carl Koch estrenó la primera versión sonora basada en el drama de Sardou y con música de Puccini.
