The Effect of the Attitude of the Interviewer on the Interviewee's Eyeblinking and Heart Rate

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of the attitude of an interviewer on interviewee's eyeblinking and heart rate. Twenty university students, 10 males and 10 females, participated in this study as the interviewees. The interviewers were three females aged 20-22 years old. The interviews were carried out with two conditions of interviewers' attitude; Friendly condition and Unfriendly condition. Friendly interviewers nodded and gazed at the subjects, while unfriendly interviewers neither nodded nor gazed at the subjects. Subjects were interviewed on each condition by two different interviewers. In the interviews, subjects' eyeblink rate and heart rate were recorded by a polygraph system. After the interviews, the subjects rated their mood during the interviews. The results showed that the interviewees' eyeblinks decreased as time passed in Friendly condition, and increased in Unfriendly condition. There was no significant effect of condition on heart rate. The subjects evaluated their moods more negatively in Unfriendly condition than in Friendly condition. Results indicated that eyeblinking is a useful physiological index to evaluate an interpersonal relation
