History and evolution of the urban fabric in colonial, republican and modern times in Ibagué

Abstract

El marco fundacional de la mayoría de las ciudades de Colombia tiene sus raíces en la organización territorial adoptada por la monarquía española. En el caso del municipio de Ibagué, se logran evidenciar los cambios en su estructura física que permitieron poner en contexto su leve desarrollo en la región Tolimense; desde la estructura urbana de la ciudad, se describen históricamente los periodos colonial y republicano, hasta la era moderna, destacando las diferentes argumentaciones encontradas en cada periodo. La exploración bibliográfica y cartográfica, nos permite describir temporalmente las condiciones urbanísticas de cada periodo. Para realizar este estudio del territorio se utilizó el método de análisis temporal con un enfoque cualitativo que permitió la obtención de datos descriptivos sobre el contexto urbano en los diferentes periodos históricos. The foundational framework of most cities in Colombia has its roots in the territorial organization adopted by the Spanish monarchy. In the case of the municipality of Ibagué, the changes in its physical structure that allowed to put in context its slight development in the region of Tolima are evidenced; from the urban structure of the city, the colonial and republican periods are described historically, up to the modern era, highlighting the different arguments found in each period. The bibliographic and cartographic exploration allows us to describe temporally the urban conditions of each period. In order to conduct this study of the territory, we used the method of temporal analysis with a qualitative approach that allowed us to obtain descriptive data on the urban context in the different historical periods.
