Linguistic Mechanisms for Immersing Readers in Manga: On the Draft of\nBarefoot Gen Part II by NAKAZAWA Keiji

Abstract

Manga is created based on the mechanisms that enable the rapid and vivid formation of mental images of the narrative world. Among the complex mechanisms, this paper will focus on (1) onomatopoeia, which affects the reader’s perception, and (2) the characteristics of Japanese text, with its excellent visibility. It also points out that (3) the incorporation of the reader’s background knowledge into the mental images of the narrative world promotes the personalization of the work’s content. The paper will present a study of the work in which the linguistic mechanisms of (1) and (2), as well as the dialogue between story and reader (3), contribute to the formation of a deep and rich manga-reading experience.15Pdepartmental bulletin pape
