Josiah K. Lilly, Sr. and Chemist Ernest Eberhardt

Abstract

Josiah K. Lilly joined the company at age 14, serving as the general errand boy. Smart and ambitious, he graduated from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1885. Returning to work, he established a botanical laboratory, hired the company's first pharmacist, and eventually became director of the research department. By 1890, Josiah had taken over many of his father's responsibilities as head of the company.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
