Complement Component C5a Activates ICAM-1 Expression on Human Choroidal Endothelial Cells

Abstract

In this report, the authors define a potential pathophysiologic role for complement activation in AMD by showing that endothelial cells of the human choriocapillaris express the C5a receptor and, when stimulated, increase expression of the adhesion molecule intercellular adhesion molecule-1. These results help to close the gap between the role of complement and macrophage recruitment in AMD
