Tritiated Thymidine Incorporation into Hair Follicle Matrix and Epidermal Basal Cells After Stimulation

Abstract

The incorporation of tritiated thymidine into the cells of the epidermis and hair follicle after stimulation of the skin by plucking has been studied. Incorporation levels increase after a time lag of 10 hours. For up to 96 hours the levels show fluctuations which are interpreted as indicating synchronous progression of cells through the cell division cycle. The length of S and the total cycle time for follicle matrix cells and for the basal epidermal cells can be roughly estimated. The values obtained are discussed and compared with those obtained by other techniques
