Environmental monitoring of the oceans

Abstract

Monitoring in one form or another is a centuries-old activity but in recent years it has assumed a more rigorous form, partly in response to an increasing demand for data on which to base regulation and control measures for pollution, and partly thanks to the development of sophisticated technology. This article briefly discusses current pollution monitoring programmes and considers the Recommendations of the Donaldson Inquiry in this context.
