Dopo ze beep. Some observations about the uses of the answering machine

By Pierre-Alain Mercier and Pauline Ridel

Summary: The personal answering machine has become part of our daily lives, almost imperceptibly, Unlike other recent innovations, such as mobile telephones, the Internet, and, in France, the Minitel, it has not been the subject of much research, press coverage, advertising or apocalyptic prophecies. Its 'career' may be compared to that of the audio cassette: it offered a marginal improvement, or perhaps just a new type of packaging, that made it easier to use tried and tested technology. Magnetic recording - the 'minicassette', as it was called then - has nonetheless been an indisputable success worldwide, and its supposedly significant impact on leisure, education, cultural identity and communication are difficult to assess accurately.Mercier Pierre-Alain, Ridel Pauline.
