The effects of sex steroids on gonad sex differentiation of Anguilla anguilla

Abstract

Elvers and yellow eels 15-18 cm and 22.25 cm total length. reared in fresh water at 22.24 °C and on commercial eel food, were treated with 17-alfa-methyltestosterone (MT) and with 17-alfa-ethynilestradiol (EE) given with the diet. A very high proportion of the untreated and the MT treated eels developed as males. A significantly high proportion of the EE treated eels with e high dose (1 mg/kg of food) differentiated as females. In 22.25 cm eels the effect was weake
