Upton Sinclair e as origens da crítica à imprensa segundo o modelo da propaganda

Abstract

Upton Sinclair adquiriu popularidade internacional como jornalista e literato de origem norteamericana, mas foi também um dos primeiros a elaborar uma reflexão crítica e sistemática sobre a fortuna da imprensa no século XX. Como Lippmann, o autor viveu e reagiu com radicalidade à crise em que entraram as instituições liberais após a I Guerra Mundial. Diferentemente daquele, contudo, Sinclair assumiu em suas análises um viés político libertário e trabalhista. Segundo ele, a ascensão do jornalismo informativo, então promovida pela grande empresa capitalista, não era senão uma forma de seu ingresso num estágio superior de propaganda, o da propaganda disfarçada de objetividade científica. O artigo examina suas ideias, situa-as e, enfim, pensa suas atualidade intelectual e epistemológica, considerando os debates sobre o jornalismo originados de obras como as de Chomsky e Schudson.Upton Sinclair conquered international popularity as writer and newspaperman but at the same time was one of the pioneers to thinking critically the press in the 20th Century. As Lippmann, the author reacted viscerally to the crisis inside which the liberal institutions had succumbed after the First World War. Differently from Lippmann, Sinclair nevertheless developed up a radical and leftist political view in his studies about the subject. According to him, the rise up of a news based press meant its access to a higher stage of propaganda – the propaganda disguised of scientific objectivity. This article review the main ideas of the author about this, locating that ideas in its propositional context and, finally, stress its intellectual and epistemic actuality, considering the debates over the press aroused by the work of scholars like Chomsky and Schudson
