Abstract

The thesis has as its main subject, the renowned brazilian writer from Goiania, Bernardo Élis (1915-1997). He was the only representative member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters ( a non-profit literary society) to come from the state of Goiás. According to distinguished literary critics, he was indeed an eminent name in regionalist literature. Goiás position as periphery and frontier is responsible for the negative image about the land and its people. We believe that Bernando Élis played an immense role and was partially responsible to change this perception. The "sertão" (backlands) was now being represented and viewed trough and internal look. The writer, being a believer of the marxist philosophy, used his literature as an instrument for social criticism. Basing on the intellectual references of the twentieth century, we try to identify and understand the role Bernando Élis played as a writer and most importantly, the position he occupied as an ambassador of Goiania's and the state of Goiás literature
