The inference to the best explanation of the argument and the problem of not designed alternatives

Abstract

A questão acerca da aceitação de teorias científicas é um dos problemas centrais do debate entre realismo e antirrealismo científico. A proposta deste trabalho é, em um primeiro momento, apresentar e analisar a estrutura do argumento realista da inferência da melhor explicação. Em um segundo momento apresentaremos algumas críticas ao argumento da inferência da melhor explicação, como o argumento da indução pessimista, o problema da subdeterminação e o argumento do conjunto defeituoso. Ainda nesse capítulo apresentaremos o problema das alternativas não concebidas, apontado recentemente por Kyle Stanford como uma nova abordagem crítica antirrealista em relação ao argumento da inferência da melhor explicação. No último capítulo apresentaremos um exemplo da história da biologia, a teoria da pangênese de Darwin, que servirá para ilustrar o problema das alternativas não concebidas, permitindo uma melhor compreensão da crítica antirrealista de Kyle Stanford.The issue about the acceptance of scientific theories is one of the central problems of the debate between scientific realism and anti-realism. The purpose of this work is, at first, to present and analyze the structure of the realist argument called inference to the best explanation. In a second step, we present some criticisms of the inference to the best explanation argument, such as the argument of the pessimistic induction, the problem of underdetermination and the argument from the bad lot. Also in this chapter, we present the problem of unconceived alternatives, recently appointed by Kyle Stanford, as a new anti-realist critical approach towards the inference to the best explanation argument. In the last chapter, we present an example of the history of biology, Darwin?s theory of pangenesis, which will serve to illustrate the problem of unconceived alternatives, allowing a better understanding of the anti-realist critique of Kyle Stanford
