ECOLOGICAL STUDY AT LITTLE RANN OF KUTCH (NEAR WILD ASS SANCTUARY) OF GUJARAT IN WESTERN INDIA

By P.K. PILANIA AND N.S. PANCHAL*

Abstract

Vegetation and soil in the vicinity of Wild Ass Sanctuary of Kutch district of Gujarat State in India was investigated.  This region is considered as a saline desert. Total twelve species were found of which five species of herbs, three species each of grasses and trees were found. Three species each belongs to Poaceae and two species belong to Chenopodiaceae. Contagious distribution pattern of plants was obtained. Total plant density for herbs was 2.313 plants m-2 and for trees and shrubs were 3.375 plants m-2 was found. Concentration of dominance and diversity indexes were almost similar for different sites. Among trees and shrubs Prosopis juliflora (Sw) DC was dominating with total density of 3.125 plants m-2, which is an exotic species. Suaeda fruticosa (Linn.) Forsk. was dominating with total density of 0.688 plants m-2 among herbs. Sodium (Na) and organic carbon (OC) was found to be maximum at site 3 (74.939 ppm and 0.401 %) while minimum at site 4. EC was maximum at site 3 (9.771 dSm-1) while minimum at site 1. Phosphorous (P) was found to be maximum at site 1 (38.607 kg ha-1) while minimum at site 4. Correlation was obtained for density with Na, EC and P were 0.250, 0.771 and -0.975. Na shows very poor positive correlation with density which indicates that some other salt type also affects density. This type of correlation might be due to adaptation and the vegetation is salt tolerated
