Last Offer of Reconciliation

Abstract

This allegorical print depicts a meeting between Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis with scenes representing War and Peace in the background. It is thought that this print was first published at the time of the Hampton Roads Peace Conference and then re-issued after Lincoln's assassination. "The message of the print, forgiveness and restoration, contrasts sharply with the prevailing public mood in the wake of Lincoln's assassination, which was one of bitterness and vengeance.
